Distance X, area B, batwing, Angle Q, my gosh, a lot more than I expected. In true Marine fashion (speaking as an AF guy), I take the pre-test at 0900 and if I pass, then I take the RSO course as 1300.

Todays update deals with the Gorilla ammo. When I looked at the round it seemed the bullet was loaded far back into the case. I took a couple of pictures to show just how far the Berger 130gr is set in the case, obviously so it can load reliably in a gasser. I'll try and pull a round to see what kind of charge they are running.
Today's social update is a proud report that I am now a Marine Corps certified range OIC and RSO. I attempted to uphold the honor of the USAF (retired) but failed as I did answer one question incorrectly. I knew the answer but overthought the question. The classroom portion was at the Basic Course's Heywood Hall. It's a modern building with nice classrooms and there was a basic course of instruction occurring with probably 200 Lts, give or take a few. The fun fact of the course was that there are a lot of LaRue Targets being used on Quantico ranges, and I'm not talking the 100 pack paper grid targets. 
Don't forget to hydrate and you won't since there's a sign at every urinal.

I received my 2/3 IPSC target in the mail today, a nicely made piece of AR500 steel with large hanging holes. I'll spray it white and build a nice hanging stand for it, then cart it out the next time I'm at Quantico as I'm certain it will improve my wind calls and increase my probability of hit.

| Because of this thread I have taken delivery of a LabRadar, Elite 1 Mile rangefinder and Kestrel Elite Weather Meter Applied Ballistics Combo. So far the AB books are great reading and the DVDs are very well done. Only time will tell if this old brain can still actually learn anything. |

Today's update deals with better internet speeds and the dissection of one of the Gorilla rounds.
I took the day off to get my FIOS upgraded to Gigabyte speed as they were having a promotion and I thought what the heck, let's add more power! The FIOS folks told me to put aside 4 hours for the upgraded to the outside and inside boxes. The tech arrived, cut a piece of Cat5e, spliced the connectors, installed the cable from the ONT to the modem, checked the speeds on his fancy tablet and he was done. I was like  as I basically could have run the cable all of 5 feet and saved a day off (and the installation charge). Anyways, they guarantee 750mbs and I'm not doing too badly speed wise. I'm not sure what I'll do with such fantabulos speeds, but maybe I can stream five movies, run a movie server for the neighborhood and download big files all day.

I took one of the Gorilla rounds apart using the bullet puller to see what sort of powder charge they were using as they state the rounds are better optimized for gassers than a bolt gun. The projectile had a way to go before it separated:

Today's update deals with brass weights from the virgin Alpha and Lapua cartridges.
I used the RCBS ChargeMaster to weigh 50 random cases of each manufacturer. 
You calibrate the ChargeMaster using 50gr weights, zero it with the pan in place and then record the results once the weight is established and the scale reads stable. 
I truncated the results to the first and last five cartridge weights, but the average and standard deviation are for the lot of 50. The five grain SD is miniscule, equaling 324 milligrams.

Just got back from the desert. It will be too hot pretty soon to shoot down here. It hit 90* today and my phone with the AB app running kept overheating. I had gusting wind (5-10mph) at 6 o'clock that was pretty manageable. It was bright out which made it challenging for the lasers but the new Radius proved up to the challenge. I was able to get some data on the 130 TMKs with 4831 sc.
47.4 gr should be a winner. Sorry in advance for the crappy pics but as I stated before my phone was not working in the heat. I was mainly focused on using the ballistic app when I got it cooled off. I was shooting a 18" precision .223 and my trusty old .308 today as well and I have to say this .260 is boring. In a good way. Inside 800 yards hits are a given. Attached File Attached File |

Ha, an Excursion, you could fit a fire team with gear in that thing, the only down side is 10mpg. Do you have any MV data for your .260, I believe you’re shooting the 18” version? Mine is a 22". It just looks small on top of my station wagon. I've got the 7.3L diesel so mileage is about 14/ gal. So much better Next year it will be put out to pasture in favor of a new Raptor.
I am getting +/- 2790 with the factory 130 Hornady. With the 4831sc and the 130 TMKs I should be able to get to 2760 safely. I was pleased with their performance yesterday. I might end my cartridge development here until I get some H4350 in quantity. I need to find a spotter that lives close to me. It is hard to spot misses at distance. Lucky for me I don't have as many with this 260. When I was shooting my match.223 yesterday I gave up on the 1000 after 5 shots because I couldn't spot impact. To my surprise I had 2 hits on the right edge when checking targets. It was so bright and the mirage was running so big I couldn't see shit yesterday. Maybe getting old too. Let's see some more range reports. I know Mark has sold more than 5 of these things. Also I wonder when we will start seeing reports from the guys who got just barrels. |

I am getting +/- 2790 with the factory 130 Hornady. With the 4831sc and the 130 TMKs I should be able to get to 2760 safely. I was pleased with their performance yesterday. I might end my cartridge development here until I get some H4350 in quantity. I need to find a spotter that lives close to me. It is hard to spot misses at distance. Lucky for me I don't have as many with this 260. When I was shooting my match.223 yesterday I gave up on the 1000 after 5 shots because I couldn't spot impact. To my surprise I had 2 hits on the right edge when checking targets. It was so bright and the mirage was running so big I couldn't see shit yesterday. Maybe getting old too. Let's see some more range reports. I know Mark has sold more than 5 of these things. Also I wonder when we will start seeing reports from the guys who got just barrels. I'm officially old this month so I know what you mean about having a spotter. The empty brass wasn't a bad price at all, the loaded ammo was 330 or so for 200 rounds with the berger ar hybrids, so I figured that is value added since that is one of the bullets I want to be able to use, Might grab 200 more sometime soon. D3, when you dismantled one of the gorilla rounds.... Was the powder varying in length? |

I hear there are some tricks for when it ls that bright, and you can't focus in addition to the mirage. Kinda like a pair of sunglasses for your optic. If you don't mind trying it, grab some IMR 4451 |
