I started off by filling the truck with every conceivable accoutrement, you know, just in case you might need them, but for some reason I forgot my small range bag with chamber flags and my larger rear bag. The weather was different from the first Quantico trip being cloudy and in the 40’s, high humidity and what were originally light winds, picked up across the target line. The temps climbed into the low 60’s and the sun peaked out a bit, but it was overcast for the session. We were scheduled to shoot a couple of strings at 800y and then move back to 1000y, but range control had other ideas. We fired our first strings and went down to check targets and make adjustments. When we got back to the line, range control told us we had an hour until they were calling it a day. I guess there were no Marine units shooting on the other ranges, or the guys had hot lunch dates! No matter, it was still range time but it did disrupt the rythum of what I had planned. No big deal, just another planning factor. I actually met another member of the ARF team and a guy who’s following and contributed to the .260 thread! We spoke about the .260, what he was shooting for the day and he let me sit behind his rifle and look through his Vortex Gen II HD – I’ve got the itch again. Some impressions for the day: I greatly dislike the wind, it is the debil. We had light winds crossing the line and sometimes at our face, but it was moving 10-15mph down at the target line and who knows what it was doing at different points on the range. Shooting at 800 is exponentially more difficult than shooting at 600. It seemed to be so easy at 600, but it was soooooo hard at 800. Very few hits at 800; I was all around the steel, but not the number of hits my ego desired. Having a spotter is good. The guy next to me was not doing well with his 03A4 and Mosin so I spotted for him so he could get dialed in. It took a while to get him on target, but once he was, he simply had to determine his holds as he did not have fine adjustments on his optics. I believe he said the subtention on his 03A4 clone was 3MOA. I was hitting high but did not know how high I was striking. I thought I was closer on target than I was and could have dialed down ½ to ¾ MOA, but I didn’t and was using holds for elevation and wind. Bad call on elevation, I should have dialed it in. As to the wind, it was sporty. I’d call a shot that was just to the right and do a hold over, then fire the next and be 10 inches further right. I did not get much better at my wind calls during the session. Sporty wind, debil wind, sporty wind was the debil. My gear is working well but I think I’m going to a larger steel plate so I have a higher probability of hits is prudent. I had no issues with the Prime, Hornady or the FGMM, and I had no popped primers. I did chrono the Prime Hornady and FGMM again using the LabRadar, but I've not pulled the data. It was at the end of the session so I was basically firing a string and ensuring I was capturing the MVs. The trip always starts the same, heading up 95 north the few miles it takes to get to Quantico. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4716-203430.jpg Scum sucking Ted Kennedy managed to get the American taxpayer to dig a $3B hole under Boston but here in the Commonwealth we have private toll lanes, $4.30 to drive the express lanes on a Sunday no-less. A variety of rifles including 5.56, 6.5CM, .308, 300WM, and the guy next to me shooting a 1903A4 clone and a Mosin sniper. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4731-203442.jpg Looking back at 1,000. Once we set up, we move our vehicles back to the parking behind 1,000. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4733-203443.jpg It’s still a long way to the pits. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4734-203444.jpg Kit all setup. The grounds were still pretty wet from rains so the tarp was a good touch. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4735-203445.jpg Dillo looking over notes: https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4737-203447.jpg I bought a 10” Viking Solution gong set up to use. Most everyone else had nice setups using 2x4s and one guy had a homemade steel pipe holder for his steel that was really nice. Here are two hits on steel with the third passing over the top. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4738-203448.jpg We were at a known range of 800 yards. I used the Radius to shoot a distance to the gong and it came back at 797y, which was probably spot on as the pits were probably 6-9 feet further back from where I set the gong. I was hoping to use it at 1,000, but we were booted from the range before we could move back. Sorry for the picture but the iPhone just wasn’t capturing the screen in the outdoor conditions. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4742-203449.jpg Ha, now I know why everyone was shooting using 2x4s. I have tons of wood so I know what I’ll be doing before the next trip. I’ll also see if I can order a small silhouette so I have some additional area to gauge hits. Not having a spotter was also difficult as sometimes you just can’t see every shot. Clearly I was shooting high, and the wind was killing me. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4744-203450.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4745-203429.jpg Okay sports fans, I'm running out of stuff to post so it could get inventive until we can get some additional range reports coming in from the field! So if i read this correctly the jp hp bolt performed well in the 260 and you will be sticking with it? i have a bunch of larues and am more than willing to run a jp bolt and firing pin if it keeps the primers in the brass on the prime ammo. as i now have 4 cases that i need to get shooting up.
i was hoping to have my 2 tranquillos this weekend but instead i think the dealer messed up the paperwork and the wait will be starting with a post 41f new trust.so at this point there is no need to wait any longer it's time to get shooting the loud old fashoned way. thanks for the great post so far and i too ordered up a rangfinder,im a sucker for a sale, off to find a deal on a jp bolt,i can keep the spare larue bolt for one of the 308's defender thanks for posting all the great info. |

View Quote Sorry to hear your dealer fubar'd your paperwork. It just stinks to have to wait soooooooo long for something like a suppressor. My 6.5CM project is back on the plate. I have a LaRue field grade 308 barrel (obviously with a LaRue barrel extension) and was thinking of sending it to Craddock Precision, along with my Krieger barrel, to be barreled for my tOBR. Craddock can do that, or they can turn a BAT extension to fit the tOBR. I just have to make my mind up as to direction. I can't wait the two weeks for Mark to make a sparrel, which is like washing your car, as soon as I do it, Mark will release a sparrel in 6.5CM. |

At this point I'd be surprised if he released a 6.5. It took him this long to sell .260s and they were only to guys that bought a rifle. I'd say you'd be fine.

The X type rebar hangers are able to take a lot of hits but the weight really is not fun to deal with while transporting them. So I think you are right on with the 2x4.
I enjoy all the posts it gets me pumped to get my barrel, some day. |

Looks like a great day to shoot. 2x4 posts staked to the ground work well for target holders, however I like having the gong stand made up of AR500 steel. Cuts down on a little weight and bulk for moving around. Wish I had access to a range like that vs having to deal with going out to the desert.

Do any of you guys shoot factory loads, or is everyone reloading? I'm not quite there yet, and looking for a long range hunting load. While looking came across 127gr Barnes LRX, and also 142 accubonds from Doubletap that looks good on paper for what I need and was wondering if anyone has any experience with their loads.

I've got to the point that with good data..including a hand held wind and gauge and somewhat consistent wind, a decent spotter, and scope that was dials customized for the load, and good ranging and ballistic software, hitting at long range is possible. But like you said, if the wind is swirling or inconsistent, anything over 500 yards is exponentially harder with each 100 yards of distance. One of the guys at camp has a G7 rangefinder and matched scope. He shoots a 7mm bolt gun and has killed Elk over 800 and has hit a milk jug over a mile away. His setup like a champ with no wind It all about the guy on the trigger. Gunwerks uses a customized Nightforce scope in their LR package. Leupold custom shop will do a turret for about 70 bucks customized to you specific load, which should give the same result. In addition to being a great rangefinder, they have solid software built right in and outputs info in mil, mrad, and or MOA. They do provide a wind hold as well, in 5 mph increments that do work, but still when the wind is blowing hard and inconsistent, even the best limit their shots to 400 yards. Give them a last calm bluebird day, and nothing under 1000 yards is safe. I know there has been a push for the rail mounted range finders, but if you really want a tool that I believe is on of the best on the market for complete firing solutions, the G7 ifits the bill. It isn't magic and can't do anything for unknown variables like swirling. However if you are looking for a compl t ballistic solution tool, this is the one. At least it will eliminate the other variables allowing you to work on you wind magic knowing ups nd down you ar spot on. |

In true Marine fashion (speaking as an AF guy), I take the pre-test at 0900 and if I pass, then I take the RSO course as 1300. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4775-209071.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4776-209072.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/52736/IMG-4777-209070.jpg View Quote |
