| I ordered 100 of the Alpha cases and spoke to Andrew at Alpha about the brass. He said it's on par with the Lapua brass and has a H2O capacity of 53 grains. He said it has been annealed and it has a bit more neck tension than, for instance, the Lapua (but I did not ask how much of a reduction). He said he's been shooting his brass in his GAP-10 with consistency and success. I discussed the LaRue 260 and he gave me his rifle's favorite load, which I believe was 43.5grs of H4350 with the 130gr Bergers (I need to confirm as I was at a banquet). |

An ARF member was nice enough to invite me out to Quantico tomorrow for some long-range shooting (600-1000y). Since this is my first time there, I'll be focusing on getting acclimated, observe the range ops, mechanics, etc., as well as putting some rounds downrange with the .260. I have my preliminary range cards so I can also work to validate them with range time.
I've only shot long-range once in 30+ years and it was at the LaRue range-day at the 2011 ARFCOM 3-Gun in KY when Dakota Meyer was walking my shots in at 980y. I'm excited to finally do some shooting that isn't limited to the 100y local range.  Of course I'll take pictures and provide a range report, even if I stink up the place.

anyone know what a good over all scope is to put on the .260? i have my choices narrowed down to two NF models.
4-14x56 and 5-20x56 not really sure which one but i don't want to over do it either. i AM NOT an experienced long range shooter beyond 600 yards which shoot my Barrett .50 BMG but nothing past that. that .50 is also kinda cheating too. thanks for the input. MB |

NF ATACR F1 5.5 x 25 is awesome on my 22" .260.
I have heard good things about the NF 4 x 16 F1. I have two of the older NF 3.5 x 15 F1s and they are good glass. They are great at 600 yards and are fine at 1,000 yards. Too windy and stormy for long rang precision shooting here today. So the stash of dillo dust is being put to use on the Big Green Egg:

I'm back from long-range day it was simply fantastic! Thanks to my shooting buddy for the push to get out to Quantico. I'm a member, but never stopped out at the range, mostly because I didn't know anyone there or how the ranges worked. Shooting buddy made it very easy calling me last evening and walking me through some of the operations and then it was just up to me to show up a 0730 with my kit. I have to say it's a bit intimidating looking over a 49 position line at a full 1,000, but it couldn't have been a better day. It started out overcast but it warmed up and became a full sun 90 degree day. To start there was relatively NO wind, but the humidity was quite high for springtime. The wind picked up and by the time we went to 1,000 it was a bit tricky coming in the range at the 9 o'clock at the 600 yard line and then again over the top of the berm at 1,000. Listen to me, I'm talking like I'm a pro or something and this was my first time out at long range! Interesting was a friend from my days at L-3 Communications (who I've not seen in 6 years) was also shooting - small world! There were four of us shooting on the 600/1000 (a dream since there are usually 20 shooters on the line) and others shooting two ranges over at the 300 yard line (see my range pic previously posted).
I just can’t say enough positive about this experience, it was great! I ran some range cards based off my velocities, and made cards for the Prime, Hornady and FGMM. I decided to begin with the Prime since it was shooting faster than the other rounds. After Mike and crew set targets ( steel, clays and targets) we went to the 600 yard line, and with the luxury of parking right by the line, didn’t have too far to hump gear (note to self, I need one of those fancy shooting cart things). We were shooting from the south to north with east to our right (obviously). The wind was coming from 9 o’clock and while initially negligible, it was 10-15mph when we were at 1,000. Once we set up, I dialed in using my range card which had me at 12.75 MOA for elevation and we began at 0 for windage. Shooting buddy was spotting and walking my shots in until I was busting the 8” steel and hitting the 4” clays we scattered on the berm! I ended dialing back to 12.25MOA and 1.75MOA left and just continued dinging away. I shot about 40rds from 600 and was just having a blast. I wasn’t concerned about shooting groups but did shoot a 3rd and a 5rd group. I’d say they were 2MOA, but I’ll measure and post them (note to self, I need a bigger rear bag as I was stacking bags trying to get on elevation). My shooting buddies were firing a 22-250, 308s and a sweet AI in .260 with an incredible piece of glass in a Schmidt & Bender with the Horus reticle. After a couple of hours, we moved back to the 1,000 yard line and everything changed. What SEEMED easy at 600 suddenly became hard at 1,000 due to the changing wind and heck, it’s a 1,000 friggin yards! I set up and again was shooting the Prime. I dialed in the range card suggested 32MOA and left the windage at 1.75MOA left. Again, shooting buddy walked my shots in and on the third shot I killed a 4” clay at 1,000! I honestly wanted to stop right there, you know, what you do when you make that once in a lifetime pool shot at the bar. It was Mic Drop time, but I kept shooting. I was all around the steel and clays, but did not get any further hits before I had an issue with a popped primer. Apparently a primer popped and got hung in the star chamber and caused a light primer strike, but no detonation (a good thing). We cleared the round but the primer stayed un-noticed in the extension. I chambered another round and everything just got hung up. We almost took a boot to the charging handle but we were able to get the bolt back and the rifle cleared. Everything looked good, but I took the rifle off the line to be sure. More on that once I can strip the rifle, check it and take some pictures. Also, I need to order one of Mark's rifle tube extension things you use for a carbine spring as mine (from Midway) is just about an inch too long so the bolt is not locking back. I also changed the H2 buffer to a H and it was throwing brass right at 3 O'clock. We finished up with me spotting for my shooting buddy as he also killed some clay and called it a day around 2ish. We cleared the line and then went down to 1,000 to pick up the remaining clays and take down the targets. We took the stuff back to the club house then is was a short drive back to the estate, all the time thinking, why didn’t I do this earlier??? You can see we had steel and targets at 1,000 and set up the clays at about 1025y: 
Steel we were killing at 600. The steel is 8" with a 6" orange center. That string running top to bottom through the orange is mine as are the shots to the left, shooting buddy to the right and that head shot!

We had a wildlife hold when we got to 1,000. Found this guy hanging out and we decided to cool him down by dumping a gallon of water over him and letting him dig into the mud we created. Wherever he came from it was a long walk, so we freshened him up a bit and got him ready for this walk to water. We came back after firing and he was gone, most likely across the road and towards a marsh.

One of the cooler moments of so much win today, I hit one of the clays dead on and it was nice enough to leave me with a Jimmie Stewart moment ala Winchester '73.
ETA - This was at 600. ETA II - The splash you see across the face of the target was from the steel being so close, we were getting splatter.

I met the owner of Prime Ammo this morning. Talked for a few minutes, he seemed genuinely surprised that I knew who was buying pallets of ammo from him. 
Gonna go back tomorrow and order some 260 from him, and maybe some 6.5 C. Might need some 308 while I'm at it. |

I was thinking about glass last night and while the Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 was excellent, you could see a difference in that Schmidt & Bender. Both were clear to the edge of the glass, but the S&B was sharper, and that Horus reticle was pretty slick. I've been shooting at 100y where you believe you have a clear and sharp glass with minimal chromatic distortion, but you can see the difference in the S&B when you're at distance. Don't get me wrong, the Vortex was fine at both 600 and 1000. I had no issues clearly seeing the targets and tracking my shots, and I'm not saying I'm junking my optics and making several house payments to get a S&B, but it was a superior optic. Maybe the next time we head out I'll see if I can put a couple rounds downrange with that AI/S&B combo to get a better feel. I was also spotting for one of the guys and it was pretty slick to see the bullet trace coming in at the 2 O'clock and going to the target. Okay, time to head down to the basement and watch some F1 while checking the tOBR and ensuring that popped primer didn't create any lasting issues. TL/DR: S&B is killer glass, seeing a bullet trace made me giddy and I'm off to clean and inspect. |

The worst thing you can do for your gun budget is lay down behind a S&B scope... you did know how much you "needed" it until then lol. The next worst thing is to turn the turrets on it.. then every time you make an adjustment on your other scope you just feel let down lol
I will say I do prefer a Horus reticle... makes holds very easy and spotting takes the geuss work put of a lot of things. I have 2 bushnell HDMR scopes and like them just fine.. just sight it in and don't touch a thing and only times I touch the turret is to put 5mil on when I am out past 800 or so.. |

FWIW, I have two Krieger barrels in .264 just waiting for me to make a decision. I was going to have one spun up in 6.5CM for my .308 bolt gun, but now with the way the .260 is shooting, I may just have the barrel done in .260 so I'm not dealing with 5.56, .260, 6.5CM and 7.62. I was saving the other to have a 6.5CM made for the tOBR, but by the time you finish you have a significant chunk of change invested for no real benefit. Ah, first world problems. |

Any ideas on why the primer blew,i have a 260 in my safe and a couple cases of prime ammo.i dont want to be blowing primers on a new gun.
since larue is testing the 260's with prime i thought things should be good to go. I have not yet fired my 260 because of work and the weather and was hoping to have my tranquilllo out of jail before taking it to the range.looks like i better go run some prime thru it and see how mine runs and how cratered the primers are just in case it needs a little talc at the mothership.hopefully it is a isolated incident but I'm looking for 100% reliability not the worries of primer parts jamming up my gun. Take a look through the gen 2 razors, I won't be buying anymore Schmidt & Benders. They pissed me off when they dropped the lifetime warranty they used to have. With the almost undetectable deference between the Gen 2 razor glass and substantially cheaper price of the razor I've stopped even looking at them. They used to be the gold standard but so many people are making good high quality optics these days

Wife and I spent about an hour at their booth today. While I was BSing with Jim, my wife was helping people sign up for his ammo give away contest.
Ended up ordering a case each of 260, 308, and 6.5 CM. We swapped hunting stories and pics, BSed about all kinds of stuff. Oh, and found out he's a Yooper.

I've started to inspect the rifle due to the popped primers. I didn't notice anything unusual firing until the light primer strike and the stoppage.
Here is the primer that was in the star chamber: 
This was waiting for me when I got home yesterday, it came in handy today: 
I disassembled the bolt and inspected it, the lugs, bolt face and firing pin all looked good. I disassembled the extractor and then used the Midway tool to depress the ejector so I could disassemble, inspect and clean. 
I found this on the towel next to the bolt after I stripped the rifle. I'm not sure where it came from, but it looks like a piece of a primer. 
I soaked the bolt face and then cleaned and re-assembled the bolt. Again, the bolt looks fine. 
I've not yet cleaned the rifle, I've been busy ordering stuff for the next range trip, as well as catching up on yard work and washing the car. Here's a quick chamber picture, I'll clean and inspect, probably tomorrow.
