He was in the 82nd during Desert Storm and got his CIB there. He reclassed to be a Medic and got his EFMB there. During Iraqi Freedom a couple years ago he got his CAB. I just want to know if anyone knows him personally or knows of him. He's married and has a kid or two, maybe around 5'10" or so. Grins weird from where he had a motorcycle accident as an LT up at Ft. Carson a couple years back. |

a CAB and a CIB? mustve reclassed after being a medic for no CMB. theres a magic phrase ive seen used for former 11 series guys to get a CIB while in a non-11 series MOS, coulda gotten him a star for his CIB, cant wear both. "While performing in his alternate MOS of 11X..." |

I got out in July and he's my last CO. Apparently he was killed December 26. I called Staff Duty tonight for the Rear Detachment and got the number to S-1. I'm going to confirm what a guy in my old unit told me to verify that he's gone. I never liked the guy because he had some less-than-honorable practices but it still sickens me to know that he's dead. He leaves behind a wife and at least one child and I cant imagine what they're going through. This is going to ruin every Christmas for them in the future.  Edit: I just wanted to see if anyone on here knew him personally so I could update them on what had happened. I guess it's better to have died at the beginning of the tour than after 15 months of bullshit and right before going home. They got there in November. |

Portell, 27, of Bakersfield, California, who died on December 26th in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds sustained when they were attacked by enemy small arms fire. Captain Inman was assigned to Ironhawk Troop, 3d Squadron, 3d ACR, and Sergeant Portell was assigned to Howitzer Battery, 3d Squadron, 3d ACR. Three Troopers from the Regiment were also injured in this incident. Sergeant Charles A. Duplessis and Private First Class Donald P. Sohler from Howitzer Battery, 3d Squadron, 3d ACR were both seriously injured by enemy small arms fire but are recovering in a Coalition hospital. Major Johnny A. Oliver suffered a minor injury from small arms fire and was treated and returned to duty. Hey, I checked out that blog. It's by Melody Proffitt. She was in charge of all the FRG stuff and fund-raising and ran the Troop Store. She's the wife of SFC Proffitt who was acting First Sergeant of 3-3 Rear Detachment. If he's still Rear-D I'll try and talk to him tomorrow. Thanks again.

All this does is make me feel even more like shit for not being there with my bros. I'm so torn about re-enlisting and I have to admit that it brings me to tears at times. I dont want anyone else to get hurt but I know I dont have any control over that. I wish those fucking ungrateful Iraqis could just police their own fucking country instead of having us babysit them.

I didnt want to say he died until I could confirm it. I also wanted to see if anyone here served with him so I could PM them and talk them in private. Now that it's official and out in cyberspace I figure this might as well be a place to say goodbye to a man that devoted his life to service of his nation. |

3RD ACR releived 4/1 CAV in Iraq. They were split up and some stayed in Mosul, some went up to FOB Sykes, COP Hyder, Badush Prison and some came out and releived me from Al Kasik from the MiTT/LiTT. I can tell you there are some IA that are good. Then there are some that are bad. I always slept with one eye open all the time and my head on a swivel every day. I always had my weapon red direct since I lived out on the Iraqi Army post with them. We caught some setting us up before and it was not pretty when we got done with them. I even had to put the barrel of my weapon in the face of one because he was doing something that was not right and would not do what I told him to do and stop. |
