Joker1 (absolute salt of the earth guy) is driving two dogs down here to Texas from Ohio, to be adopted. He's about 2 hours outside of Dallas, and he's broke down. He called me just as I was on the phone with m35ben (a master mechanic and all around awesome dude), and we think he's probably lost a timing belt in his 2001 Honda CRV 2.0L. I conferenced Ben in (I can't sing his praises enough), and he's quite literally stealing a company F550 and a trailer to rescue Joker1. He's on his way over to my house and I'm going with him.
Joker1 has a total of 5 dogs in his Honda - two dogs that are destined for homes here in Texas, and three others to keep him company. He's literally broke down in the middle of nowhere on I-30 ~20 miles east of Mt Pleasant Texas. We're going to tow his Honda to m35ben's shop tonight. I just want to say, that I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of my fellow Texans in fixing this. Joker1 is going to get his car worked over by one of the best mechanics I've ever met, and come hell or high water - he's making it back home. Whether that means fixing his vehicle, or even buying him a crap heap on Craigslist that will make it back, he's golden. He even has a place to stay, in the unfinished WSUB studio. 
Anyhoo, I'm waiting for m35ben to show up at my place. Once he does, we've got another 2 hour drive to find our dear lost friend. In the meantime (and afterwards), I'll try and update this thread via WiFi hotspot. 
This guy has gone above and beyond to find homes for awesome dogs. I feel like arfcom should celebrate what he does. As for tonight? I think this will make an awesome story someday, when he calms down and is no longer pissed off. 
Update 1/17 @7:30pm Okay guys - next step. We need to find joker1 a ride, and it needs to survive a road trip back to Cincinnati. And preferably - much longer than that. We'd love him to to continue using it as the Semper Fi mobile. He currently has a 2000 Honda CR-V, dead in my driveway (it's eventually going to be scrapped - we'll worry about that later). To that end, I'm on the hunt for a replacement. An SUV is ideal, and something a little bigger than his current ride would make it easier to do what he does. Thanks to your generous and spontaneous donations, it looks like we'll have some money to buy something local. He'd like to keep it between $1,500 and $2,000. I think it can be done, after a quick perusal of the Dallas Craigslist. So...let's get cracking. It's almost a fun game - who can find best SUV for under $2k?
http://dallas.craigslist.org UPDATE 1/17 @8:45pm New plan - we rent him an SUV, and have his wife drive him back in that. No issues with reliability, it's insured, there's tow coverage if something goes wrong, etc, etc. He can then find a new ride back home at his leisure, when he's better. No rush, no need for money to change hands, etc, etc, etc. Stand down on the search.
UPDATE 1/19 @3:45pm Okay, I'm taking the day off work tomorrow (1/20). One way or another, Joker1 is getting a new ride. He doesn't want to look for a rusty POS in Northern Kentucky/Southern Ohio. After talking to him on the phone this afternoon, we've decided that a mini van makes a lot of sense. More room for the dogs, a lot cheaper than SUVs with the same room, mileage is decent enough, and he'll be more comfortable on the trip home. They won't get ya laid, but they're honestly a solid, practical choice for a dog rescue. Right now, I'm thinking something like a Honda Odyssey. At least the engine is somewhat accessible, should it need some work later on down the road. 
Question for Texas residents: I have never purchased a used car in this state. Legally (or even practically) speaking, what do I need to do after handing the previous owner cash money and noting that he has a clear title in hand? Talk to me like I'm five. Note that the DMV around here (do I even need to bother?) isn't open on the weekends. Obviously, the end goal is to have Joker1 register this himself back in Kentucky. UPDATE 1/19 @7:30pm lorazepam has stepped up and donated a 2007 Ford Focus - 5spd and only 80k on the clock. You rock, dude! Joker1's wife will be flying in this weekend and renting a van to take him and the dogs home - probably Saturday or Sunday. So for now, we're just hanging out and chatting in his hospital room.

Let us know if you do get a show going as Joker as a guest. If you need to set up donations for Joker make a thread and get Stryker to approve it or do it through PM. As much work as Joker has done for the rescue dogs I see no reason why we can't help. |
