Soldier's Load As far as soldier's load goes, I was used to carrying a ton of mags in the dismounted units I was in. I personally would carry 8-14 mags, depending on the mission. In OIF, I took my leg rigs that allowed me to carry a basic load without even counting the vest, and I had proofed them for myself Stateside on 12 mile road marches in the summer heat and humidity at Bragg, used them for OPFOR details, and donned them anytime we were doing a raid or CQB. I was in top physical shape, scored extended scale PT on every for record APFT as an NCO, and could run & ruck 95% of my peers into the ground. The first time I went up with my Boy Scouts here in the Rockies for their 5 mile hike requirement on a local trail, I figured I would "just take it light", and wear my personally-made vest and a 3-day pack with some contingency supplies, first aid gear, water, snacks, etc.. Within the first few hundred yards, I was suckin' like I've never sucked before, and I didn't even have armor, mags, frags, smokes, radio, etc. We were somewhere between 6,000-7,000ft ASL. You can't find a spot in Afghanistan that is lower than 5,000ft ASL, and that's in the low-lying areas of the Helmand river valley, so when guys say they go as light as possible in that region, I fully understand. Now imagine being a 240 gunner, armored up, with an assault pack, or the AG or AB. When there's significantly less oxygen, your muscles don't get what they need, and you will feel the suck embrace you from within. If I were to try to hump 12 mags and other essential fighting load gear at this altitude, I would be stuck like Chuck. |

HMLA-773 out of Atlanta. The pilots got in deep shit over that. The teams original ride went bingo fuel and had to go. They refused to enter the ravine. Their unit wouldnt launch more blackhawks due to snow moving in and the reports about how narrow and deep the ravine was. The cobras from the Red-Dogs were returning from another mission (convoy escort I think) and happened to be nearby. They rolled in, suppressed some bad guys and took turns landing in the bottom while the other helo covered them. The Major got out and opened the ammo bay door, the SF guys torched the trucks and they GTFO'd. The pilots got personal phone calls from the commandant that were not pleasant experiences. The fear of a PR shitstorm is the only thing that saved them. Somewhere I have the entire set of pics from this. The pilots were quite the shutterbugs in the 2min they were on the ground. |

I pulled this photo from one of Plaster's books and it details the custom camo job SOG-types often used in lieu of tiger stripes. They started with plain-Jane OD-green jungle fatigues and used black spray-paint to create their own patterns. First, they'd spray just the uniforms, then they'd don their combat harnesses and reconnect the pattern, then they'd pull their rucksacks on last, and blend them in. This way, at no point was anything NOT matching, regardless if they had to jettison their packs or strip down to just fatigues. After washing, the fatigues would lose the paint smell and the rip-stop poplin fabric would soften up and the paint would fade ever so slightly. This method proved VERY effective. These are from my shooting partner / spearfishing buddy. He spent 12 years on the Teams as a sniper.
Guy with the skull over his mug (rather not show his face even though these pics can be found out there) Was awarded comindation with V for his action right after this pic was taken. 
Some may recognize some of these people.. 
My friend is now working security and consulting and acting in movies. Those that have seen Captain Phillips he played one of the shooter and got to esplode some pirate head on the silver screen. He is also working on the Chris Kyle movie. Great guy, my kids love him cuz they think he used to train seals at SeaWorld! |
