For those of you who are not familiar with the person in his avatar, it is the one and only, Emperor Norton - the only Emperor of the United States. Though originally born in England, he spent much of his life in San Francisco where he would be seen wearing a uniform befitting of the Emperor of the USA. As a young man, my great-aunt would see people like the Emperor and describe them as "colorful". Great-aunt Emma wouldn't call a person crazy. Actually, after reading part of the wikipedia link, he actually sounds a lot like our current president: "and currency issued in his name was honoured in the establishments he frequented. Though he was considered insane, or at least highly eccentric,  the citizens of San Francisco celebrated his regal presence and his proclamations, most famously, his "order" that the United States Congress be dissolved by force""In his self-appointed role of emperor, Norton issued numerous decrees on matters of the state. After assuming absolute control over the country, he saw no further need for a legislature, and on October 12, 1859, he issued a decree formally abolishing the United States Congress." |
