Never planned on having pigs through the winter but so it goes.
We happened upon these two girl piglets and couldn't resist. They're Duroc X Ossabaw Island crosses which should yield interesting results. The plan is to AI them next spring. We got them at about 25 pounds and kept them in a stall in the barn for 4 weeks. They just went outside last weekend. They're nice girls and should provide us with, hopefully, lots of little feeder pigs.

LOL, if this "winter" is like the last one, you may never go back to summer pigs again! I won't! We'll see how it goes. I still can't say I'm enthusiastic about keeping feeder pigs through the cold weather but since we plan for these two gilts to be sows I'm willing to try it. I've always liked Durocs and am particularly excited by this particular cross. The plan is to AI them to a Duroc boar. |
