We shut down our tomato canning for the year. Canned a good bit.
Took the vines out today and fenced the garden patch which adjoins the pig pen. When we let the hogs into the tomato patch, they were in proverbial heaven. They're tearing it up at a prodigious rate.

I think mine are 2-3 weeks behind yours but they seem smaller than they should be maybe 125-135lbs. I'm feeding about 50lbs every other day or so to three girls. Plus as much garden & kitchen waste as available.

Several reasons...... 1) They clean the ground of all the spent tomatoes. 2) They will actually turn the soil over deeper than my tiller can. They'll dig up rocks that my tiller would just skim over. 3) They apply copious amounts of natural fertilizer. 4) it gives them something to do other than fooking with their fencing.

So we're a bit gun shy on the potential for toxic ingestion since we're only two weeks from taking the pigs to the butcher. |
