I am curious, does anyone do IDPA here in Iowa?

What can you tell me about it?
What's the typical cost's involved? Such as joining a IDPA league fee's - how much ammo costs, etc...

Thanks

I shoot, less than I would like, at Boone, IA- Boone Sportsman's Club.  We get together once a month and pay $5 a gun.  It is a pretty laid back group that just likes to have fun and shoot.

There is also a group at Ames, IA Izaak Walton

If you join this group on Yahoo it covers both:  http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/CentralIowaIDPA/

Pretty sure there is also a group that shoots at Osceola, Ia, but I don't know anything about it...

As far as costs, for Boone there is not a "join" fee.  We take care of some basic clean-up for the range and they don't charge us for it's use.  We pay $5 a gun to shoot the courses for the day.

You will need eye and ear protection.  Obviously a hangun and two to four mags with holster and mag holders.  A concealment garment(jacket works).

Other than that, whatever else you feel you need: range bag, mag loaders, cleaning kits, the list goes on.

Cost for ammo is whatever you want to spend.  If you reload and cast then that is pretty cheap.  Basic store bought ammo is pretty common and premium ammo is going to cost more.

I would check out the site here:  http://www.idpa.com/

Ames Izaak Walton League runs a match the second Sunday of every month, weather permitting.  First gun $10, second $5.  Round count is usually pushing a 100.  Been doing it for ten years or so.  Boone does it as well.  Ankeny and Osceola are IPSC, I think,  Similar but not the same.

Can anyone go out and watch to see how they are ran? I'd like to see and meet the guys - would be awesome to meet up with some fellow ARFCOM HTF members as well!

I've been thinking about doing this lately and I wasn't sure how much it would cost. I would love to use my Sig 229 in 40 but I am thinking that might get a little more expensive and put a little more wear on my gun then I'd like so I'd probably end up using my Glock 19 (9mm) to help reduce the cost. That would mean I'd have to get a system in place for it, but what type of setups does everyone usually use?

By all means stop out and watch, but I suggest you bring your gear.  You'll end up wanting to shoot.  Ames is a nice bunch, tell them you're new at this and many will come forward to help.  I confess I haven't shot in Boone for many years, but it's largely the same crowd.

I shoot idpa primarily with Wolf Creek up in Waterloo (Traier). There is also several local groups in Cedar Rapids, C.R.A.P.S. & Linn County IDPA.
