I am sure this has been asked several times but my search yields no results.
Which shot timer should I get for my local club? We will be doing short 3 gun matches, some pistol steel shoots and a few others. I was looking at the Pact 3, Pocket Pro and CED timers. Any suggestions? |

I have 3 CED's, 5 Pact III's and 1 Pact II for my teams.
When we use them I use only the Pact types. I've had mine since 2004 and haven't had any issues. Yes you can scroll thru the shots and splits as well. The best part is one single button operation once your ready. The simplicity of setting up PAR times and or delay/instant beeps makes for easy teaching without digging in the owners manual every time you get someone new on the buzzer. You can also tune them very easily for indoor use (reduce capturing the echo's) With the CED's you have to hit the review button prior to go, it drives me nuts going back and forth between brands. I also don't like the fact that the CED's have to be charged or you have to purchase a separate battery pack. The PACT uses the same 9volt that my ears use, again ease of logistics in my range kit. The only thing about the CED's over the Pact's that I like is the additional accessory's like the Big Board so everyone can see or the score keepers timer that you can clip right on their score pad and everything transmits right to them, no more tapping them on the shoulder hunting for the time. At the last several IDPA Indoor Nationals the timers issued were Pact III's. A few SO's used their personal CED's but not many. I'm sticking with PACT. |

My Pocket Pro II has taken a minor beating and keeps going.
I like the review on it. Par time and instant/random start isn't hard to find either. |

I have the pocket pro 2. Its ok and we use the original pocket pro for the club. Most RO's use their own timers. I have had issues with the battery springs coming loose. Worst was when it happened in the middle of a 2 minute 3 gun stage. Guy had to reshoot, which eats time. Also the PP2 only has a 200 second time on it before it rolls over. It does clip nicely to the RO's pocket. It uses a regular 9v battery so you don't have to worry about forgetting to charge it.
The CED 7000 has a longer time it can record which is necessary for matches like Ironman. It also hangs easy from your neck. It uses rechargeable batteries and needs to be reset with a paperclip from time to time. It does store the last couple of strings, so if someone forgets to write the time down it is possible to go back and find it. Now it isn't USPSA legal, but most people will be ok with it. I would use either as an RO and be happy. |
