An instructor in ???
There are several paths you can take, ALL of them involve knowing what you are talking about, OR the ability to convince others of same. Of course, it depends WHAT you want to instruct... You have to have it down pat if you want to teach firearms skills, but there are other things you can teach where you can kind of learn as you go. Some credentialing authorities may have "boxed" lessons that you need to follow, which allows you to ease in to the role of instructor. There are also generic instructor certifications that give you presentation skills, as well as the fundamentals like developing lesson plans, task analysis, and risk assessments. |

If you want to teach unarmed self defense, I presume you have experience in it?
Did you achieve a Black Belt rank in recognized martial art? Would that school or federation that awarded your rank recognize you as an instructor? As far as armed self defense, I think the entry level is achieved through the NRA. They have a very strong training system. However, if you have significant military or law enforcement credentials, hang your own shingle citing your background. If you are worthy, you'll draw students. If not, work at it. |

AZ,
As noted above, there are a lot of paths to teaching. Getting a piece of paper that says you can teach may or may not be important. If you don't have any experience teaching firearms topics, the NRA Instructor Course is a great start. It covers a lot of the admin and logistical concerns as well as safety issues that a new instructor should be aware of. Beyond that, many schools that offer training have a process for getting people certified to teach their programs. For me, students interested in teaching, must attend an instructor development course and pass two tests to become certified to teach. Other schools have different procedures. If you are a student already (hopefully, if you want to teach!), ask your current instructors what they recommend. -RJP |
