I am thinking about getting into IDPA and I was wondering about how many rounds one would go through, or better yet, what is the greatest amount of rounds one should bring to the match?

It depends on the number of stages. Generally, the round counts in IDPA are lower than USPSA. Also, under IDPA rules you are only allowed to carry 2 spare mags (i.e. no more than 31 rounds on you at the start of each stage). Multiply 31 rounds by the number of stages, add a buffer for any reshoots, and you will be set.

I always take way more ammo to a match than the estimated round count.  You never know if there will be extra shooting after the match and/or added stages.  You don't want to miss out on some good shooting fun because you didn't have enough ammo.

Best advice yet. There may be an unnannounced side match or something. I always double what I think I might need.

Also never know when some idiot will tape a target before it is scored and you will have to re-shoot a stage.

Same. Our club publishes a round count before each match and I double that. It gives me enough for reshoots, extra shots per stage, etc.

Also, get in touch with your local club. They should be able to tell you what the round counts are like for their matches and help you get started.

Don't forget that occasionally someone will need to borrow some ammo.

I finished reloading a batch and my die had moved, so all the bullets were seated too shallow and I couldn't load them in a mag. My buddies saved my day. I now have extras to return the favor if anyone needs it.
