Hello,
See NRA Highpower allows Any Sight Match Rifle for the matches now, since 2009 if I read the rules correctly. Rule #'s 3.3.4 & 19.5 What power scopes are practical to use for offhand? Never used one for target shooting standing. Haven't been to camp perry. Do you guys see many using Any Sight Match rifles? Thanks!! Correction: Allows Any Sights for classification rule 19.5. |
| Match Rifle / Any Sight has been in the Highpower rule book for a long time. It's just that few people read the rule book and most matches don't allow them. Remember that just because a rifle type exists in the rule book doesn't mean you can show up to any match and compete with everyone else. Check the tournament program to make sure those rifles are eligible for awards. |

Didn't notice that in your post. Why do you think I'm asking the question? Our club has the any sight option this year. Should have clarified my point better but the question wasn't about the rule but equipment and usage at Camp Perry. I know that rule 3.3.4 Any Sight Match/Tactical rifle has been there for quite some time, I don't believe Any Sight option has been there that long for classification 19.5. My hardcopy rulebook only shows metal sights but my recent downloaded ones do. In addition my latest David Tubb video I believe he makes reference that they should allow optics since older shooters can't see the sights that well any more, myself included. I don't see it in the rule changes for 2010 19.5 shows metal sights only. http://www.nrahq.org/compete/rules/rul_hpr_10.pdf Thanks |

For many reasons, it is not a popular category. Even when they offered SERIOUS prizes like T2Ks. I'm guessing you'd want a pretty low power for offhand. The 2012 rulebook is out. |

At a high power match at an Army/National Guard base last summer there were 4 or 5 soldiers (I'm pretty sure NG guys) using 4x ACOGs on their rifles/carbines. The choice to use ACOGs may have been based more on what was available than what was the ideal choice. These weren't AMU guys or anything like that. I got the impression their CO was an experienced high power shooter who talked them into coming out for the match on the weekend. I never really had any trouble going up to 9x offhand with a .22, but somewhere in the 4x range might be more practical for NM high power rifle. |

What's wrong with iron sights?
I have heard of people using larger apertures, adding lenses to the apertures, or using the new micro sight. Have you looked into those options? EDIT: I have found this link, which may help with a place to start: http://www.gunsite.com/main/proshop/gunsmithy/steyr-scout-rifle/ |

EDIT: I have found this link, which may help with a place to start: http://www.gunsite.com/main/proshop/gunsmithy/steyr-scout-rifle/ Thanks for the link. I've spent hundreds of dollars in lenses, aperatures, eyedoctor appts etc. You just reach a point where it doesn't work any more and you're spending more time and money trying to get things to work than practicing and it's not fun any more. I began spending dollars on seeing the front sight for pistol but gave up and put on a red dot. That's not so strange as most people at the Bullseye competition use one so why not me? They've allowed scopes in smallbore for a long time. It's been said if you use a scope your scores don't count against everyone else's for awards. Unless you're in the top 10, who's competing for the top scores of all the guys there? If it's legal to use, I'll give it a try. If it doesn't count towards my classification, I probably wont. |
| I shot in a couple club matches last season (I was just getting started with the HP stuff) and used an 8-32x scope dialed down to 8x. It was too much power IMO. Later I shot with a 3-9x set on 3x, that was much more manageable. I think even a 1x would be fine, as long as you have a clearly defined target, that's all that really matters. |

Not to try an be the spoiler tonight, but consider that silhouette shooters use scopes. None that I know of who take the sport seriously use low power scopes and we shoot without the benefit of shooting coats.
Take a look at either highpower or smallbore silhouette scopes, then judge for yourself. Most use a conversion on top of the 6.5-20X which boosts the scope power in addition to the small dot reticule. Just food for thought.... |
