My gf moved from Ithaca, NY to Chicago 5 years ago.  She has been thinking over moving back to the Syracuse area and I may go with her.  How is that area? Much to do?  Job market? I am in the truck fleet/upfitting business.  Many places to shoot? :)

Why not come back to Ithaca? Plenty of ranges in the area.

Ithica is nice I have been there with her, actually going there in 2 weeks.  She just does not want to live right there again, but be within a few hours of her family.

I see. Hmm,well, I am in Ithaca. If you have your dates narrowed down that you'll be here, give me a shout and maybe we can shoot a bit.

Most liberal city and county in upstate NY. Thanks, but no thanks

Around Syracuse, in any direction, MANY gunclubs within easy driving range. Many are ~$20/year to join. You will enjoy the rolling forested hills. Go 15-30 miles in any direction from Syracuse, and you can find rural to heavily forested areas with low population densities. Excellent hunting/fishing/skiing/boating/snowmobiling/hiking. The Tug Hill and Adirondack park are beautiful. The Fingerlakes are in my estimation, one of the nicest areas in the state.

If not for liberal politicians and laws, NY would be one of the finest states in the union to live.

The city of Ithaca is quite liberal, but a good part of the county is not. I don't begrudge liberals simply for being liberals; they are entitled to their philosophy as long as they allow me mine. Many of the advances in social justice we have had in our society in the last 100 years was due to  the liberals of their days making the stands they did for the causes they believed in, so don't slam them needlessly.

There are plenty of ranges in the area, but they are mostly old hunting clubs that you have to pay to join. That part is no big deal, but they mostly have relatively short ranges (under 200 yards) and some of the ones around Syracuse seem to be going far left/commie/pinko-no silhouettes, no rapid fire, have to wear a skirt and pantyhose on the firing line etc.

Good luck getting a pistol permit in Syracuse-they will mostly likely restrict it to hunting and target shooting.

Sad but true. Aimless, please try to remember to either wear stockings or shave your legs next time you come down to shoot

If tcsd1236 is a typical example of law enforcement in Ithaca - STAY AWAY!!! No wonder he doesn't mind the liberal population there - he shares MANY views with them, judging by most of his posts... I live about 15 minutes east of Syracuse, and agree with pretty much everything HiramRanger and SP10 said... The 'burbs are pretty nice, and there are a handful of decent gun clubs around - but most only have 200 yard ranges... I've belonged to the Pompey R&G Club for over 5 years, and it's a nice club - cost is $40/year for the whole family, and we've got a 100 and 200 yard range, 8 trap ranges(5 automated), outdoor 50yard archery range with platforms at 10 and 15 feet, 40 target 3D course, and indoor 20 yard range... We have summer trap leagues, and a 3D league - amongst other activities... Range rules are pretty lax, as long as you don't shoot up the place, or are a danger to yourself or others - the rangemaster is a bud of mine, and I help him out from time to time... The membership is made up of ALOT of great people - fantastic club, IMO...

The job market IS kinda flat, but a person *can* find work if they want to - and hopefully that'll pick up... As mentioned, pistol licenses are generally restricted, but aren't that difficult to get(with a clean record) - and some DO actually get unrestricted licenses - maybe one day we'll get statewide "shall issue"...

The school district assessment was pretty accurate, except I would add that the ESM district isn't bad, either... If you plan on coming out this way, let me know, and maybe I can help out...

IMO, Ithaca IS ultra liberal, and Rochester is crime ridden...

Hardly. Just because I don't believe in totally unrestricted firearms possession, or try to explain for the uninformed  WHY LEOs do what we do..does NOT make me a granola.
I welcome any of you to come on over and go shooting any time a good time can be scheduled. Unlike you guys, I do not work Mon-Fri 9-5.

What a phucking buffoon. Do you REALLY believe this shit? This little gem of a post really turns my crank the more I read it. You must enjoy your job, enforcing all the ever-increasing mandates coming from Albany. Turn on your headlights, its raining. Buckle your seatbelts. Wear a helmet. Get a permit before you add on to your house. Don't muddy up that stream, you might harm a snail. You want to build WHERE? Who cares if it is YOUR land! (don't pay your taxes, you will see who REALLY owns it) Fees (read-hidden taxes), oh yeah, we have those. On damned near everything.  Road blocks? hey its for our own good! Better hope your papers are in order, citizen... You want a CARRY PERMIT? <snicker>grovel a bit, beg us, and we'll still tell you in most counties to call 911. A machine gun???? WTF do you NEED that for? Only COPS and Uncle Sam's employees should have those! Smile at the cameras-coming to a street corner near you. Route 81 near Syracuse is next from the latest proposals I hear...HEY! We do have Indian casinos! Hot damn, at least you can gamble (of course, the indians use the proceeds to buy more land and take it off the tax roll). And this is with Albany's approval and assistance. Thanks Pataki.

In case you haven't noticed, modern day libs seem quite intent on making this a fascist state-and country. More restrictions and more control over our daily lives. Sorry, Deputy Dog, but I DO take offense at that notion. I detest the liberal mindset, and I have no use for people who enable them.

Yes, I DO believe it. Workplace safety, the eight hour work day, environmental conservation, food safety, drug safety laws, for example, were the product of LIBERAL efforts, not conservatives. You can dislike the tactics or personal beliefs of some liberals, but to slam them ALL is to deny the very real advances that they have made in our society.

As for the laws on headlights in the rain, guess what: its demonstrated that its a practical issue that dramatically increases drivers safety for EVERYONE on the road.Same with seatbelts Helmets? You like the idea of your noggin impacting on the pavement with no protection? If I was a biker, I sure wouldn't.

As for building, we are only here temporarily; the actions we do will have results that last for years, decades, generations sometime. You might think a snail is unimportant, but the reality is that we have already wiped out numerous species through careless practices. We as a species and a nation need to safeguard what we are entrusted with. Permits for an addition? Sure! You want some guy throwing up an addition, doing substandard work that makes the house a safety hazard? I sure don't.

Sure, I disagree that NYC is not a class 3 state, but thats the NYC influence for you. Nor do I agree with the trend towards limiting carry permits. But the places to address these disagreements is in the courts, and quite frankly, I don't see many NY'ers doing that. What have you done lately to rescind the laws that you happen to disagree with, except complain about them ona  message board?

The way to combat the "modern" liberal is to present a logical argument that reasonably  counters their talking points, rather than relying on weak arguments, which is what I often see the Conservative movement doing. Quoting a  Bible verse to support a particular position, for instance, holds no weight for a person who does not follow that religion. To them, its just words in a  book........

I have seen the same thing in Cortland County.  On trips up to Toronto from LI, I get off I-81 at Homer and go up route 41 through Skaneateles to the Thruway in Weedsport.  The Mobil station in Homer has had a Cortland County poster hanging up for some time now aimed at teenagers convincing them to make a life in Cortland County.

BTW, I agree with EVERYTHING that SP10 posted...

Lastly, to post SOMETHING on topic - NY certainly has it's share of flaws, but I'd take it over Illinois in a NY second - if we could just kill off the libs(kidding), our state would be OK...

I detest the concept of a nanny state dictating every little detail of my life. I prefer taking responsibility for my own life. I don't need or want "big brother" telling me what to do-or else! (you will note that not following these mandates result in varying degrees of punishment-for victimless crimes)  I'm a big boy. Life is risky.

Well, I'm sure you love these foolish, innumerable laws. Job security. Those rules are for the protection of others, not the driver.  The idea of someone driving an uninspected junker down the LIE at 75MPH is scary to say the least.  This hits rather close to home today.  My sister is driving up to Canada today and called from the side of the Thruway near Scottsville.  A tractor trailer shed a tire tread in front of her and she hit the "road alligator" head on.  Luckily all she lost was her headlight assembly and front license plate holder.  Still I cannot imagine what additional car parts we would see on the road without inspections.

While you may be diligent in your efforts to maintain your vehicle ina safe manner, the reality is that many others do not. Hence the need for a state vehicle inspection system. As others have said, it is for the protection of others on the road.
FYI, I don't stop, let alone cite, for 5 over. No agency in my area does. I generally only pay attention to seatbelts when there is a state initiative on for that particular violation. As I have said, the headlights in the rain is a safety issue for everyone on the road. While you may think you can see just fine without headlights, they are just as much so OTHER people can see YOU. Haven't you noticed how soem cars will seem to sort of "pop" out of the rain on a rainy day? Its because they blended into the background and were not visible to other motorists.

I don't take donut breaks, nor do I have time for personal reading on duty; many days I barely have 10 minutes to get a sandwich down.

Any other pointless complaints on your part?

I couldn't agree more - I mean, how poorly does it speak for our state when a liberal democrat like hillary klinton decides she's going to be a NY Senator - nevermind the fact that not only has she NEVER done a single thing for the citizens of the US(let alone NY) - but never even LIVED HERE - and STILL gets elected over a Republican who actually had a pretty good record of public service in NY???

Not trying to explain anything away; thats the results  NY voters give in surveys; they vote for THEIR rep , but blame inaction on OTHER legislators. Your response simply reaffirms that sort of viewpoint. I on the other hand can't stand my  Assemblyperson......she proposed the State 50 caliber ban and in her correspondence to me  based the need for the  legislation on the fact that the rifles in question are used to shoot down aircraft.  State Senator Seward on the other hand  seems to be doing an OK job as far as the firearms issue goes.

If you do decide on settling here please consider attending  my GUNS ALONG THE MOHAWK shoot.
I live near Utica which is  right smack dab in the middle of the state a little over an hour from Syracuse.
SP10, ED, Aimless, FP1201, and a whole bunch more show up, we even had a guy from Florida this year, and we may have a guy all the way from Austrailia next time!

I expect that ICU, and Hiram will attend this year if thaey can get away!

Next year  I'm going to have to limit attendance to 40 people though the club can't handle more than that for the CMP shoot.....

PS... tcsd1236 you won't be one of the 40 with that atitude!

Ah Shit SP10, why did you invite me to the party?

I would share pretty much the same sentiments as SP10.

I have been harrassed & fined by the local "revenuers" under the State Troop B organization. They have added another dozen troopers in an effort to beef up the border up here. Well, they have managed to kill a good number of citizens with the road blocks on I-87. Hopefully after two deadly crashes they figure out how to do this safely... They harrass the locals and they expect respect in return. Hmmmm.... I consider myself a 40 something professional, father of two that does his damn best to help his fellow man. But quite honestly, after the "treatment" I have received in the past two years between the state troopers, County sheriffs, City cops and even the damn park rangers are being a PITA. When did the LEO's of this state declare war on it's citizens? I know I not to stir up the crap Ed, but SP10 brings up some very good points. If the LEO's want our support, how about treating us like citizens and not subjects? There is so many damn laws on the books, I'm damn well sure that every day I pull out of the yard, I break a couple of laws.

It just adds insult to injury being treated like this, with the heavy tax burden we suffer under in this state. It was never like this for me, it has just been in the past couple of years we have been subjected to this. Is New York State so hungry for additional revenue that they need to shake down the public at every corner? Are LEO's are mere revenue generators for a money hungry state?

That is what it looks like to just more than me. This observation has been shared more than once to me...

Have fun in your tree stand SP10, don't ponder to long. Not worth the effort...

There is so many damn laws on the books, I'm damn well sure that every day I pull out of the yard, I break a couple of laws.

It just adds insult to injury being treated like this, with the heavy tax burden we suffer under in this state. It was never like this for me, it has just been in the past couple of years we have been subjected to this. .

Be specific about what sort of stuff you are complaining about. Because I have news for you: for every law you think is a nuisance, there are a lot of people who WANT that particular law enforced, for whatever reason they might have. Its not about treatring you like a "subject". Do you understand that you have to follow the law, even if you happen to disagree with it? Perhaps its your attitude and willfull non-compliance thats drawing the attention you dislike so much.

Most of your post is  just general complaining  that just about anyone throws out on the net. Be specific and I'll address whatever point you have, if I can.

Now it's getting good.
1.  Speed laws!  Why is 55 the 'safe speed?  When the laws were written there were no air bags, radial tires, crumple front ends, or decent seat belts.  Cars are safer yet the speed that is considered 'safe' is still 55, god help us 65 on the interstate.  Speed laws exist to raise money for the local courts period.  I get a f****n speeding ticket a few years back and I got fined $350.  The same court session saw shoplifters getting off with a $25 fine.
2.  Terrorist threats!  B.S.  The state police added 30 new Troopers to troop D to protect me from terrorists.  Since when did the NYSP exist to protect the borders of the United States.  They added troopers because the time was right to increase their budget.  Get more $ while you can.  Now they randomly stop every fisherman on the St. Lawrence river for 'safety checks' busting them for drinking a beer.
3.  Seatbelt law!  I know this was covered already but it ticks me off.  Stop saving me from myself.  I would wear the seatbelt regardless of the law.
4.  Assault weapons ban.  Enough said.
5.  It's illegal to shoot cats.   What the hell.

But quite honestly, after the "treatment" I have received in the past two years between the state troopers, County sheriffs, City cops and even the damn park rangers are being a PITA. I'm not bitchin', but deeply concerned at the state of affairs today....

Here are the facts.....

First..
The roadblock on I-87 has resulted in senseless deaths. Take a two lane highway and put a road block in the middle of the Adirondacks. On a turn no less. And not only once has this resulted in death, but twice. Huge error in judgement in my opinion and this opinion is shared by the local population and several elected officials. No bitching, just the facts. And the roadblock is usless, no reported results or captures. Last I knew it was still there. Scarey as hell seeing a 18 wheeler coming up on to you in your rear view mirror, wondering if your next....

Second...
Going 21 in 15 mph zone. The speedometer barely can register at these speeds. Park ranger, Sunday afternoon, power trip.... Cost me $75 and three points... Yeah, I'm a hell raiser... Started off with being very cordial, yes sir and no sir but still got the shaft.

Third...
Roadblock with Border patrol, State Police and other that I did not reconize. They open the back lid my pickup cap and look inside. WITH OUT MY PERMISSION! Last I knew, one would need a warrant for that? When asks about if one needs a warrant to perform the search, I get a whole bunch of attitude on how I could spend the rest of day with my truck being searched. One shuts up to only pass thru the gauntlet... Yeah, we are treated like subjects....

It never was like this... I just wanted to understand why the change?

And like never before we have other roadblocks for seatbelt/registration and the sort on a weekly basis. Snarls up traffic so one can be fined for a registration that may be a couple days past due. O, we know that the local DMV is so nice to visit.

I used to respect most of the LEO in the area, but as of late a new breed has moved in. Younger, cocky and basically looking to harrass the shit out of you. Sorry, but I am not impressed these days....

So tcsd1236, you even called some of these laws, bullshit laws, do you enforce them?
