September 19, 2005 Scotland tops list of world's most violent countries By Katrina Tweedie A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America. England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest. The study, based on telephone interviews with victims of crime in 21 countries, found that more than 2,000 Scots were attacked every week, almost ten times the official police figures. They include non-sexual crimes of violence and serious assaults. Violent crime has doubled in Scotland over the past 20 years and levels, per head of population, are now comparable with cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Tbilisi. The attacks have been fuelled by a “booze and blades” culture in the west of Scotland which has claimed more than 160 lives over the past five years. Since January there have been 13 murders, 145 attempted murders and 1,100 serious assaults involving knives in the west of Scotland. The problem is made worse by sectarian violence, with hospitals reporting higher admissions following Old Firm matches. David Ritchie, an accident and emergency consultant at Glasgow’s Victoria Infirmary, said that the figures were a national disgrace. “I am embarrassed as a Scot that we are seeing this level of violence. Politicians must do something about this problem. This is a serious public health issue. Violence is a cancer in this part of the world,” he said. Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem. The study, by the UN’s crime research institute, found that 3 per cent of Scots had been victims of assault compared with 1.2 per cent in America and just 0.1 per cent in Japan, 0.2 per cent in Italy and 0.8 per cent in Austria. In England and Wales the figure was 2.8 per cent. Scotland was eighth for total crime, 13th for property crime, 12th for robbery and 14th for sexual assault. New Zealand had the most property crimes and sexual assaults, while Poland had the most robberies. Chief Constable Peter Wilson, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, questioned the figures. “It must be near impossible to compare assault figures from one country to the next based on phone calls,” he said. “We have been doing extensive research into violent crime in Scotland for some years now and this has shown that in the vast majority of cases, victims of violent crime are known to each other. Cumbernauld, was apparently the appropriate answer. But now the town, to the north-east of Glasgow, has a claim to infamy after winning an award for being the most dismal place in Scotland. The Carbuncle Award, voted for by readers of business magazine Unlimited, is bestowed annually on a Scottish town which is deemed to be a blot on the landscape. This time the dubious honour has been given to Cumbernauld in recognition of its town centre, which has been described as "a rabbit warren on stilts". Plook on a Plinth - Cumbernauld's newest claim to fame The centre stems from the town's rebirth in 1956, when it was designated as one of five "new towns" in Scotland. At that point people were being moved out of Glasgow as slums were cleared and the "overspill" were given the opportunity to move to new properties in places like Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Livingston, Irvine and Glenrothes. The idea behind the towns was to effectively start from scratch, and town planners were given the opportunity to design the towns more or less as a whole - they are characterised by open spaces and parkland. The five new towns have had varying degrees of commercial success. Suburbs in the towns are dispersed and without access to a car residents can be left feeling isolated and removed from the facilities which are available. But Cumbernauld's carbuncle is in recognition of its town centre. Cumbernauld centre was built in the 1960s A sprawling, angular concrete complex, it was described by the award organisers as "soulless and inaccessible, something like Eastern Europe before the wall came down". Gordon Young, Carbuncle chairman and editor of Unlimited magazine, accused North Lanarkshire Council of seriously neglecting the town. This is the second time the infamous 'plook' has been given to a town in North Lanarkshire, last year it was awarded to Airdrie. Mr Young said: "Cumbernauld, won this prize, not because of the mistakes made in the 1960s, but because politicians have failed to do anything to remedy those mistakes. "It is not a deprived area, and it is not suffering from a lack of investment, what appears to be lacking is political will and sensible planning." However, despite Mr Young's comments the centre won design prizes in years gone by and architectural consultant Neil Baxter said the building was perfectly functional. The "honour" was for the centre and not Cumbernauld as a whole He also dismissed the award as a "cheap publicity stunt" by the sponsoring magazine. Cumbernauld has a population of about 52,200 people, making it the largest town in the North Lanarkshire Council area. It can trace its origins back over hundreds of years, and at one time it had a thriving textile industry. In later years it was founded on quarrying and mining, and later still it developed a high-tech economy as the home to a number of electronic companies. Cumbernauld I’LL SPLIT YOU One of the worst area’s is Condorrat. It is full of the most furious people you could ever meet. When walking into the pub in the main street is like something out of a western, you go in, and because they have seen you before, you get the most icy stares you could ever imagine. Another thing about Cumbernauld, and in particular Condorrat again, is the car parking wars. If you park your car anywhere near someone’s car in Condorrat, you better be prepared. If it is out of place by so much as an inch, they will try too kill you. Literally. They think they own the spot that is outside their house, and if you go near it, the last thing you will here is - “Ye better fuckin move that by the way!!” And the next morning, you can rest assured your car will be vandalised. Or worse. If you park in their spot, they will try too literally push your car away. Then there is the people of Cumbernauld themselves. Such a happy lot. It’s full of the most torn faces you will ever see. And you don’t even have to look at them for them to say “What the fuck are you looking at, iIll split you, you cunt!!!!”. News
Scotland has higher crime figures than England and Wales. ( AND USA) But after I was trawling throught the crime figures as I posted in the other thread. Scotland has the two counties with the lowest crime figures in the UK too. Rural area's we'll asume but the safest inthe UK.  Wales had 3/4 lowest crime in rural area's too. Cities suck Taffy the country bumpkin Wally I hope you guys are safe over there. Are you suffering from this latest hurricane? |

Thanks mate...I'll see if I can get a copy locally. And I too pray that Jason is ok...It's hard to imagine evacuating from such a large city. I had a disscusion with the family last night about always staying prepared...You just never know when the bleakest of situations might arrive.

Split means to cut or slice...Referring to the cutting edge of a knife. It seems the "Cumbernauld's" are filled with Yankee verbage. "I'll split you from head to toe" I don't fancy the thought...That is why I always bring a "Gun" to a knife fight. ETA: I have not heard the word "Cunt' used more than" here"or an "English" movie...It is considered the "C" word here. But, I have thought of "IT" yet would never say it out loud...Very Taboo in the states!!! |
