I'm less than a year out from a divorce in a 13 year marriage. I called numerous lawyers and got the "free consultation" then downloaded and used the prognosticator app the courts and lawyers use but claim they don't follow. I then drew up terms, my wife took them to a lawyer of her choosing for a consult who said "looks legit" (I'm over simplifying obviously) and we both used one lawyer to submit the terms to court. We were done in about 90 days for a total of about $1500, and that's with an 8 year old involved.
Michigan uses a formula to calculate spousal support - 1/3 the difference in income for 1/3 the length of marriage. Education, disability, etc can have a minor effect on that also. Child support values are very cut and dry.
I'm happy to share more details, or even just listen if you want to chat, feel free to PM me. It doesn't have to be tens of thousands of dollars and many months/years in the making, that is self-inflicted damage, but it admittedly only takes one person to trigger the slide.
I didn't want it to happen and now I'm rebuilding my life but it feels much better to be out the other side. Most days, anyway.
