OH, YEAH!
UN-LOCK MICHIGAN!  A petition drive in Michigan that is seeking to repeal a law that underpins many of Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s restrictive COVID-19 executive orders has enough valid signatures to proceed up the chain that leads to the state legislature, which could drive the final nail in its coffin, documents show. The conservative-led initiative, called Unlock Michigan, needed 340,047 signatures to obtain certification from the state’s Bureau of Elections, a necessary precondition to send the matter to the state’s GOP-led legislature. An April 19 staff report from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office (pdf) estimated at a 100 percent confidence level that the petition drive had amassed 460,358 valid signatures out of a total filing that contained just over 538,000 signatures. Vindictive ex-wives club?
I don't have my hopes up. While the petitions will prove out as valid, what is there to prevent the triple threat team from challenging anything and everything before sympathetic like minded judges. Whitmer's strategy from the very beginning has been to lawfare all of her orders and run out the clock every time. When the legislature & citizens step up with "Hey you can't do that" she consistently follows up with "Make me stop" then proceeds with doubling down on punitive and vindictive actions. The AG repeatedly acted on behalf of the governor and not the AG of the citizens of Michigan. SOS has been picking & choosing parts of the law she will enforce and ignoring those parts where she can drag her feet. There is no enforcement mechanism nor punishment for their highly questionable actions and methods. Our legislature isn't willing to play hardball with those departments with the tools they have - namely the state budget. |
