WTF is up with the registration renewal fees!

I just had to renew 3 cars today.

Why does the renewal on a 1993 car cost more than one for a 2005?

The SOS thinks my 1994 Chevy Caprice Wagon is worth more than my 2001 Hyundai Elantra.  When I had a 1992 Olds 98 that car was worth twice as much as the Hyundai and the Hyundai was only two years old then.

It is based on the value of the vehicle.  Is the 93 that much more of a vehicle than the new one?

Most likely based on the original price of the vehicle.

The 93 is $5k - reg fee is $180
The 05 is $35k - reg fee in $130

WTF?  Registration and renewal costs are based on the value of the car?

I have to move my second car from Ohio and register it in Michigan.  Anyone know everything I'd need to do to transfer the title and everything?

Last time I had to do it All I did was take my title from what ever state the car was titled in along with the cars registration from that state to the SOS.  Tell them you want to register the car in MI. They will register it in MI, give you a MI registration and plate.  They will take your title and send it to Lansing where you will be issued a new MI title.

Make damn sure that if you don't get your new title within 2-3 weeks you contact the SOS about getting it.  If you don't contact them they will charge you the title fee again and it will take another 3-4 weeks to get it issued.

ETA: the cost to register my car has gone down from $158 the first year ('99) to $91 this year
