So there is a gun show in Canby next weekend and I'm sure I'll swing by after work. Been wanting a rifle to keep in the rig that isn't a high dollar EBR or something. Basically just to have at all times so when wheeling or whatever I have something to plink with.

I've been told by many the Nagant is the best bet since it is cheap and cheap to feed. But I know nothing about them other than that and that I shot the one at the CBR PR match.

Is there anything I should avoid with them? Anything I should look for? Price range I should be in?

I'm not sayin I'm gonna buy one this weekend but if a decent one pops up I want to know what I'm lookin at.

Three types:

M91/30 Long barrel (very long)
M38 Short carbine (I have this model)
M44 Short carbine with folding bayonet.

Caliber 7.62mm x 54 R (the R stands for either Rimmed or Russian I think)

You should be able to find a decent one for less than $100. For a truck gun I would recommend the M38 or maybe the 44 just because they're shorter.

The power is on par with a 30-06 and they are plenty accurate.

ETA: When inspecting a possible purchase, use a bore scope, or light. Most of these have never seen anything but corrosive ammo. Make sure the bore isn't rotted out. Also, learn to clean the thing after firing corrosive ammo. Basically rinse the bore with windex immediately after use, then clean as usual.

My recommendation is to order one from Aim Surplus. I have a C&R so I can order myself one and have it shipped to me, but of all the other deals I've seen it's a good deal to pay the extra $10 and get a hand select and pay the few $ a dealer will charge you. I recently purchased a M44 from them and love it. I'm probably going to order another one ....maybe a 91/30.

Mental Note ~I gotta remember to stop hitting the edit button instead of the quote.......

The M44 are like 2 pounds heavier than the M38s. Also the M44 are sighted in with the bayo out and will throw your POI off by about 6 inches at 100 yards if not extended.

I see Big5 has 91-30's on sale for $89 this week, get to pic your own, beware of war year production, machining was rather hurried.

Many 38's are counter bored, bore drilled oversized the muzzle. I thin this was done to fix damaged crowns.

I would wait for a Big-5 sale and then calll around. That way you can look through a bunch of rifles and select the best yourself.

It stands for rimmed.
I wouldn't rule out classicarms.us for a nagant either.

Want an accurate one. Want one made for perfection by little Finnish fairies and huge boobies

Go with a m39 version.

Kinda spendy but they are ohh so worth it compared to a 91 44 or 38 anyday.

ANYDAY I tell ya... Ill bet my lumpia on that one.

These rifles had a large difference in bore diameter. Some are as large as .313. The boxed Winchester ammo is .311.

My brother, nephew and I each bought an M38 last year and mine seems to have the largest bore. It is also less accurate than the other two as a result.

If you can I would somehow check and get the tightest one. Just a thought.

I have the 91/30 and the M44. They are both 1943 and very accurate. If you do get the M44 remember to shoot it with the Bayo out. ( thanks NOX ) they are dead nuts at 250 yrds with it out. With it in they are about 6 in to the left. It is true ask NOX.

I have shto clays at 300 meters with my 91/30 and that is off hand standing. I can't do it everytime, but enough to drop and Elk, deer, or human at that distance.
