21 years old is the federal law to buy. 18 years old is the state law to own/possess. You could always loan it to him, then gift it later if you're worried about it. No paperwork is required, so it kind of up to you.
BTW, I assume you're both residents of the same state......because if not, then there is an issue. |

A newborn can legally "own" a handgun. Possession by a minor may (I just don't know the law on this one for sure) require an adult presence.
The legal minimum age to which a dealer may sell a handgun is 21. The legal minimum age to which I can sell a handgun in Missouri is 18. If the potential 19 year old buyer is also a resident of Missouri, and you have no reason to suspect they are unable to legally own said gun (straw purchase clause), then you absolutely can sell or give a handgun to them. We will of course require a picture of said handgun. 
ETA: I may have to amend my above statement after a brief internet search. Allegedly there is no minimum age in MO to purchase a handgun. It's all so confusing, which is how the man entraps you. |

Eric, I think you nailed it.
One thing I would give to the 19yr old is a "bill of sale". They are not needed, but it's his first gun...he might want to keep a written record of it. In this day and age, I don't know if people still do that, but he might like it looking back on it years from now, if you are going to write a note to him...etc. Just something he can keep with the gun as a reminder...etc. |
