Does anyone know if sworn Correction Officers can get a permit to carry or do they have to have a documented threat against there life to get one.

I'm not an expert on the legislation that authorizes it, but I believe the Law Enforcement Officer's Protection Act of 2004 (2003, maybe?) protects all commissioned law enforcement officers (maybe this includes corrections officers...?) from prosecution under state law for carrying. In other words, you may have protection from prosecution under federal law. So it doesn't really matter what MD law says as long as you meet the criteria of the applicable federal law.

A CO can get one, but you need to have a better reason then "Hey, i'm a freaking CO". You still need to get a CC  permit from the state police.

CO's have it tough. Running into ex-inmates at the mall can be kinda tough. Or someone asking to you help because the store next door is being robbed, and all they see is your uniform.

You need to get a carry permit from the Maryland State Police to carry off duty.  You will also need a documented threat against you for MSP to issue you a permit.  Any weapons you carry while on duty (depending on the post you are working) are turned over at the and of shift.

I still think you probably don't need a permit. Call MSP and ATF and see if your situation is covered by the Law Enforcement Officers' Protection Act.

I hope the hell you do need one,as should EVERYONE,until such time that the People's Republic of MD grants them to EVERYONE who is not experessly disqualified .

I agree. It was wrong for Congress to separate regular citizens from cops, to deny us our basic rights while granting immunity from prosecution to cops. However, the law is on the books already and there's nothing we can do about it. akshooter100 might as well take advantage of it if he is able to.

The MD law that is on the books leaves it to the MSP's discretion,and they are the ones slamming the door.Erlich can stop it,as per his campaign "promise" to give us some relief,but there's NO WAY he'd do it before the next election.If he wins,maybe he will,but since,unfortunately, I doubt he'll be reelected,he had ought just do it.

I think you are confusing federal law with Maryland law. In akshooter100's case, it doesn't matter what Maryland law says--federal law overrules it (assuming he is covered by that particular federal law).

MSP is indeed a corrupt organization full of gun-grabbing JBT's. Ehrlich isn't our best friend, but he's also not our worst enemy either. Unfortunately I think the socialists will push him to take a stand on these gun bills this year so they can run ads against him in the fall saying that he supports selling "assault weapons" off the back of the ice cream truck or whatever nonsense they dreamed up in their crystal-meth induced stupor. Watch for Ehrlich to wither under pressure from Maryland socialists. Our only chance is to show up en masse at the hearings for these bills this year to defeat them.

 I was a CO in Delaware up until a couple months ago. The biggest thing you need to find out is if MD classifies you as LE. We wrote a letter to MD and we are good to go in that way. Delaware decided they where going to institute a training program to "qualify" us to carry. My fellow brothers that are still there are still waiting for this program to come about. Once we do get it the MD attorney general said there is nothing restricting us.

if you look at the definition of the the federal law it defines LE officer as having "powers of arrest". In MD 90 percent of CO's do not have power to arrest (except inside the jails & DOC facil.)...The  DOC Home Detention officers have limited arrest powers when it comes to dealing with persons under their supervison..........In the state of MD a C/O needs a MD state Gun permit to carry a firearm off duty...........Call MSP Lic. Div. if you want on this......but they will tell you the same thing...........good luck.................

My grandfather was a CO at the state pen in downtown Baltimore from 57-85.  He had a permit during the time he worked there, but he also had several threats made against him.
