Kentucky is a C3 friendly state so a Form 4 or Form 1 and you'll be shootin' short. Depending on where you move the CLEO sign-off can be a piece of cake or nearly impossible. If you're moving to the socialist north east you may have trouble.

I have heard horror stories of people trying to get class 3 stuff in Louisville or Lexington under different administrations...if you move to a more rural county it will depend on the local law enforcement and how they feel about YOU and it. Some, if you will pardon the expression, "don't take kindly to strangers" and others do. Where I live, they will look at it and have done some in the past but it helps to be "in" with some known citizens or the local gun shop or politicians. Then again Ernie F. frequently visits these parts (our current guvnah).
Bottom line is that once you are settled and established..you will have a much better chance than if you move here and a month later you try and get one. Essayons |

From what I understand, the LMPD chief is a dick and won't sign off on anything. However, the Sheriff does so nothing to worry about.

The County Sheriff is completely cool about it. But they do charge either $25.00 or $20.00, I can't remember. I'll let you know when I go to get my next Form4 signed. Should be along in about 30 days. Bob |

The LMPD Chief has no say in the matter, from4 states Chief Law Enforcement Officer, that would be the Sheriff in this State(KY).

The police chief of a major department is a CLEO and is acceptable by the BATFE. Also, some Judges, States Attorneys, and others qualify as well. The County Sheriff is just one option.

Also, with the Louisville-Jefferson County merger, he is the CLEO for the city/county. As I understand it, the LMPD has jurisdiction, over the Sheriff's Dept., thru-out the county.

I am with Louisville Metro. we went thru this with BATFE some 15 yrs. ago on who is authorized to sign the form 4, because some years ago we did sign the forms, but it was stopped. The ruling by ATF was in Louisville only the Sheriff would sign the forms. With merger nothing changed, NO police dept. has any jurisdiction over any Sheriff Dept. in this State, Ky Constitution governs this.

Yes, no problems at all with Sheriff Aubrey in Jefferson County. He will charge $20.00, though, and do a background check first. He also requires that you go ahead and do your fingerprint cards first and drop those off with the paperwork all together. I dont know why. My last signature request took less than 48 hours total, and the longest was four days during election season.
And by the way, fingerprints in Jefferson county can be done at Jefferson Metro Jail, which is only a block or two away from the Sheriff's office. |
