I'll be going there for a wedding in a few months.
What should I see while I'm in town? What should I avoid while I'm in town? I did go through the process to get a non-resident carry permit. If I understand this correctly you don't have an approved handgun list but there is a 10 round magazine capacity limit? No odd ammunition laws regarding hollow points like New Jersey. Any specific odd laws related to carry to be aware of? Thanks for the help. |

No odd ammo laws.
Correct on the 10+1 only Groton sub base is cool, you can tour the USS Nautilus. Battleship Cove. If you're coming with a woman they may be into Mystic Seaport. Kids will like Mystic Aquarium but it is incredibly expensive for what it is. New London is kind of a dump. |

I'm not very familiar with that part of the state, but there's all kinds of stuff to do in CT and it's not big state.
ETA: Good on you for getting the OOS permit! |

State & Federal property, military bases etc, the usual no gos..
I used to go to metal shows at the El & Gee venue (spelling?). I've seen Unearth there half a dozen times. It was a great hole in the wall venue back in the day, not sure if it's still around. Thats the extent of my New London experience lol. |

Both Newport RI, and New Haven are only an hour drive. Both have great restaurants. You can also take a ferry to Block Island or Long Island. Mystic (next to New London) has an aquarium.

i live 2 towns over from new london. very high crime rate/murder rate. id suggest not hanging around there.
my wife works at a doctors office in new london and they have armed security , just to give you an idea |

After that I followed them around with a bunch of other locals. Bury Your Dead, Light Is The Language, 1000 Falling Skys, Ludvico Technique and so on. One of my favorite shows ever was at the little MSC skatepark in Westfield iirc. They let me and a couple other regulars ride the miniramp during the show. Hatebreed, Biohazard and Sick Of It All. It was the coolest shit ever. I ate shit on the spine so hard in the middle of Sick Of It Alls set that they stopped playing and asked if I was ok. Hahahaha |

If you go to the aquarium there is a restaurant called The Steak Loft down the street. Great food.

OP is gonna end up being from Detroit or Newark or something and think we're all pussies when he discovers New London isn't literally on fire.
It's a pretty shitty town, OP, but don't let us scare you. A lot of us have been there multiple times and most of us even survived. The visit to death ratio is like 7 to 3 so you'll probably maybe be fine. ETA: If you need anything while you're up here don't hesitate to ask, myself and many others here would be more than happy to help. Up to and including coordinated covering fire. |

Hahahaha. "Probably maybe be fine."
I do appreciate the good advice though, gentlemen. I'll pop smoke if I need to call in air support. |

It's the smallest "city" in CT. Mostly a shithole but you will be fine if you maintain your situational awareness. Just avoid any groups of indigenous urban dwellers wearing red bandanas and be out of there by dark as that's when the C.H.U.D. come out.

New London is nothing special. It is fine down by the train and ferry stations. There are a couple good food joint in that area.
Mystic is a touristy place so you may find some places are closed in the winter. Steak Loft is very good and has been since they opened. If you like Lobster and want to have a lobster roll, Captain Scott's in New London is terrific. They have the real CT one, which is warm with hot butter. They also have the wrong kind which is cold with mayo. The casinos are nearby if you are a degenerate gambler. There is some good but overhyped restaurants there. Let us know what kind of food you like and we can recommend some good local joints. If you want I am sure some of us would meet up. |

View Quote Second the Captain Scott's recommendation, although they shut down for winter, if you like lobster you cant go wrong with the warm roll. Lots of small, deli bakery type places that have awesome food. Steak loft is great in Mystic. Downtown Mystic is a nice area, quiet during the winter months. A few more upscale restaurants downtown there, Anthony J's, and The Engine Room are a couple of our favorites. Mystic Market is a great deli/market with upscale offerings. UConn Avery Point is a nice campus, right on the Thames River and Long Island Sound, Bluff Point, also in Groton, is a beautiful area with some flat trails. Also beautiful views of the Sound. Naskart in Oakdale is a lot of fun. Indoor souped up go-kart track. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos both have tons of things to do. Restaurants, gambling, shopping, and shows all the time. The Submarine Force Library and Museum is way cool, right outside the gate for Sub Base New London. Easily enjoyed in a few hours. Small museum and static display of the USS Nautilus where you can do a self guided tour through the submarine. Just down the road is also the National WWII Submariners Memorial, also real cool and a somber reminder of how many subs and men were lost during WWII. A bit further down the same road, is Electric Boat where the current Virginia Class sub is manufactured. Might get lucky and see a submarine module sitting on their pier. The Coast Guard Academy is also in New London. I believe you can still get on the base for tours and to visit the museum there. Admissions office can also get you a tour of the base. If you want to do some shooting, Academi in Salem is a nice indoor range and pro-shop. Pretty sure the guys on the HTF would also be more than willing to host you as a guest at a local club, myself included. Feel free to IM or pop back in as you get closer to your trip... |

Anyone know if the Submarine Force Museum is considered "on base?"
Don't want to drive over there to find out I can't carry inside or at least leave it locked in the car. |

For his carry permit?
It's like a 6+ page document that requires sets of fingerprints, notarization, documentation of "approved" training courses, etc. I had my local PD do the prints. Sent them off and CT determined they weren't adequate? So I had to send another set. Guess my local PD is inadequately fingerprinting every single person who comes through or CT just wanted to make it harder on me. At the end of the day it cost me north of $150 and several hours of my time between running to get prints, mailing multiple sets of documents out, etc. I will say that they mailed it out much faster than I expected and even sent an updated card quickly after they misprinted my date of birth. Hint about what was so ridiculous about it: the vast majority of the rest of the nation outside of New England doesn't have such a crazy process. |
