Thats pretty pathetic.. if i can use a handgun i should be able to use a .223 which has more than enough energy.

Ummm... yeah you will and I'm glad about that.  Yes, it is possible to kill a deer with a .223, or even a .22LR, but its MUCH more likely that you'll never recover it.  Yes, you can hunt with a handgun with less "energy" but energy isn't everything.  Mass, momentum and wound channel are what actually do the work.

Personally, I'd like to see .30 carbines and a few others banned for deer as well.  Its a crying f-ing shame that we need regulations to enforce ethical hunting practices.

Oh yeah... the only magazine capactiy limits only apply to shotguns.  Its three.

Only mag limit is on shotguns.  3 rounds max regardless of what you're hunting.

I never hunt with less than a 30 caliber rifle.
In a handgun round...I use a 41 magnum.
Ethical hunters who want quick and clean kills are the only hunters that should be in the woods.

So you're saying that anyone who uses anything less than a .30-06/.308/etc. isn't ethical?

No.  Just those who insist on using inappropriate calibers and ammunition for deer.  There are a fair number of dopes out there who seem to think deer are a great training aid for thier mall cop/commando exercises.  Deer are to be respected and pursued with respect and ethics.  If you can do that and use a black rifle, more power to ya.  If not, take up paintball guns.

Looking at getting that 243 WSM upper for mine to use it for deer season.  There are many other caliber conversions so you can use the AR.  YMMV.

I've heard nothing but good stuff about the WSM.  People seem to like it even more than they like the original .243.  I do love the range of bullet weights that makes it more than appropriate for everything from squirrells to medium deer.  I see a standard .243 in my future some time.

They have those for AR15 lowers?  Or AR10 lowers?

For regular gun season this year I'm planning on using my .50 Beowulf along with my Rem 700 .30-06.  Some day I'd like to get a 6.5 Grendel upper too.

AR15 lowers.  It is a shorter round so it will fit.  Just different mag followers.  That and the ammo is available now.

Are you sure you don't mean .243 WSSM?  The WSM family is based on a cartridge the same length as the .308 and there is not currently a .243 listed for it.  There is a .243 WSSM that has an OAL of 2.36".  It will sling a 95 grian bullet at 3200 FPS and if the bullet will hold together on impact, that would make an adequate deer gun.  Still a bit marginal for my tastes, but you could do worse.

Who makes an upper for it?

There's always the 6.8. That should be an awesome whitetail round,as there are many good softpoints for .277 cartridges.
It's sort of idiotic that I can't hunt deer with a 64gr SP .223 load, but I can use a .45auto upper to hunt them (no ft. lbs floor for rifles).
