Seattle police said that an intoxicated man accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday night. Officers were dispatched to reports of shots being fired in the 2300 block of 3rd Ave. in West Seattle around 10:45 p.m.
They arrived to find a man sitting his vehicle with the driver side door open and his legs dangling out of the car. Police noted that he was bleeding from the calf area of the left leg. They recovered a Glock 27 and a spent shell casing from the scene.
The man told police that he and his girlfriend had been drinking earlier that night. They begin to argue and decided to drive to Belltown. The girlfriend thought her boyfriend had consumed too much alcohol so she decided to hide his gun in her purse. The man, who has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon, retrieved his Glock. He told officers he wanted it because he heard "Belltown is dangerous."
The man placed the gun in his back pocket initially, but then decided that the best place to conceal the firearm was under his leg as he was driving. He parked the vehicle and as he was getting out he tried to grab the gun. It went off striking him in the leg. The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The leg injury was as described as non-life-threatening. No one else was injured in the incident. Police recovered the gun and placed it into evidence.
