My latest build (Grizzly lower, no name upper, 20" Bushy barrel) seems to be short-stroking. Fired brass comes halfway out of the chamber as the bolt stops halfway back. The FAQ on short-stroking is down. This upper runs ok on my Bishy/Jewell lower, which makes me think I have a buffer or buffer spring problem.
Any ideas? 1911fan Swapped buffers and now the lower works. Weird- the nonfunctional lower's buffer was 6 1/2" long, and the one I took out of a fixed telestock was about 3". Now both uppers work on both lowers. What did I just figure out?

You figured out that rifle buffers go in rifle stocks and carbine buffers go in carbine stocks. Be glad you didn't put the short buffer in the long stock.
That part of the FAQ isn't down. |

Ok, an assumption. The rifle buffer is the long (6"+) one, and the carbine buffer is the short (3") one. So why does my rifle length not work with the long buffer, and why does the fixed telestock work with the long one? Or do I have it bass ackwards?

Fan, Given that you're on this site and don't know the difference between the parts I can't begin to imagine what might be wrong with your rifles. I'd really have to see them to figure out how bad off they are. |

Ouch! Does that count as my first flame?
Since the other two (yeah I know, only two) work ok this has me baffled. Maybe I should rephrase the question: Why won't a rifle length buffer work in a rifle length stock? The only thing I changed to make it function normally was the buffer. 1911fan

Rifles fitted with collapsing stocks MUST be fitted with a carbine (short) buffer. Rifles fitted with non-callapsing stocks (A1, A2 and maybe the old "postban fixed telestocks") MUST be fitted with a rifle (long) buffer. Any other combination will not function correctly and may cause damage to the rifle.

Ok, so an A2 butt should use the long buffer, but it won't cycle with a long buffer...... works fine with a short buffer though. I think we're still on the original question of 'Why doesn't it cycle with the correct buffer installed?" not to mention "Why does the fixed telestock lower cycle with the long buffer?" Bent buffer tube? Brand new and visually straight..... I dunno.

Not at all Fan, just what I said, it sounds like you don't have the necessary knowledge to spot an obvious deficiency when you see it. The problem could be very obvious and we could chase around it online forever. Tell me about the rifle stocked lower. Has it ever worked? What mods have you done to it? With it properly assembled can you lock the bolt to the rear with the bolt catch? |

Tweak, I think your email nailed it- without the upper butt screw I can retract the bolt back past the magwell, which I could not before. Off to the hardware store tomorrow for a shorter screw.

Fan,
Per your email, the A1 length is .555" OAL with a .370" shank while the A2 is 1.146" OAL with a .944" shank. Numbers from measuring a sample of one each in the shop. Do your's have the proper drain hole through the center or are they solid screws? |

I've got three screws, all the same, 1.146"/.944". None of them have the drain hole. Interesting, I've been ordering from here & there and haven't seen any breakdown of screw or receiver extension dimensions. Or stocks, come to think of it. So my problem seems to be A1 butt + A2 screw.
Another damn learning experience. Where can I order the screw I need, since it's not (apparently) a common thread? 1911fan |

It a fairly common thread hence all the substitute screws. Any of the AR vendors should have A1 screws or you can chop down a long one.
