Then, in 1992, The Seattle Times published the detailed stories of eight women — including lobbyists, congressional staff members and a woman who served 10 years as Mr. Adams' personal secretary — who accused the senator of sexual misconduct.

The allegations ranged from sexual harassment and groping to rape and included stories of Mr. Adams serving women a mixture of drugs and alcohol.

None of the women in the story was named, but the women signed affidavits attesting to the truth of their accounts and acknowledging they could be required to testify in court should Mr. Adams sue The Times.

Instead of suing, Mr. Adams abandoned his campaign. Patty Murray won the seat.
