Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Dumb question about the National Forest

I do quite a bit of hunting and riding 4 wheelers in the ANF and I'm getting to know the area fairly well.

My question is, can I set up a tent pretty much anywhere off the road?

I'm thinking about taking my 7 year old up there to explore the oil roads and snowmobile trails around where I hunt.  We would stay within a few miles of the truck and probably grill out of the back.  Maybe walk a few hundred yards off an oil road and setup a tent.  

Is this allowed and is this something people do?

Yup, you can set your tent up almost anywhere you wish.
