I live in Centre county, but we could do something on ANY range in Centre or Blair. Any thoughts?
I'm in Delaware County.
What time frame is good for you? What type of shoot do you have in mind? |
Wow, Delaware county is pretty far from Centre county. Are you sure you're willing to travel that far for a fun shoot? I was thinking that we would only do an organized shoot if we could get at least 5 or 6 of us to commit to an actual day and time (nothing yet). This would be an informal "bring your own" deal. As in, BYO targets, ammo etc. Any type of firearm is welcome but the emphasis would be on the AR-15 family of weapons. At least, that's what I was going for. I usually bring my other toys as well, anyways. The emphasis would be on an easy going day at the range. A way to meet other AR enthusiasts, tell stories, exchange equipment for tryouts of new stuff etc. If we wanted to do some sort of contest or points match, that would be left to a vote or something along those lines. This invite comes with one caveat. I am not in any clubs, so if we did it around here we would have to either go to Scotia (and they have a rule of, no more that 3 rounds in a magazine for rifle, 5 for pistol) or somebody else would have to arrange to get us in a club range. I'm open to any suggestions. It doesn't necessarily have to be in Centre county, just not too far from it. I was thinking some weekend in early October.
I'd be in if you can find someplace that allows rifle caliber full auto and wasn't more than 2-3hours drive from Chester County.
I'm gonna make a few calls to get the ball rolling. If anybody want's to call me to suggest a date or anything else, just IM me. I'll check it at least twice a day.
I'm from SW PA and may also be interested in attending. It's about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive for me. Keep me updated. Thanks, John
Deal me in.
I can only do Saturdays or Mondays. Sundays are reserved for Family. And October 9 is out; I already have something scheduled for that day. But I'd surely would like to do something some weekend. |
Please include me as well. Depending on the day and the kids soccer schedule.
Regards, Gary |
Oh...if you are shooting on private ground, best to clue local law enforcement in on the plan. I've been to similar events that have been shut down by LEOs. Not a fun situation after a long drive. Yes I know..private property and all but I've found an ounce of honey beats ten pounds of vinegar every day of the week.
Regards, Gary |
I'll play, the further east the better for me as well.
Lose the three round rule |
I'm in State College.
Scotia's a nice range, but the three round rule blows. Private would be better, and maybe we could do a "toss in a couple bucks and have a cookout" thing too. |
State college area works, lots of land, old friends. But, not on a Home game weekend. the team may be weak but traffic is still a bitch
Private land sounds good that way the 3 round rule would not apply.
Distance is relative. The faster you drive the quicker you get there and it doesn't seem that far. Throw in some CD's and your good to go. |
Talked with a range officer at Scotia about relaxing the 3 round rule. He said no dice, so I'm looking at going the private property route. I would suggest my property, but I've only got about 50 feet of useable distance. Right now I'm leaning towards Saturday, October 16th. The previous weekend is the Harrisburgh gun show I believe. Penn State plays Pitt away, so no traffic problems to worry about. The cookout thing sounds cool. I'll consider that as well. More info coming. Till then...
Talked with my son and he'd like to go too.
I figured it would have to be on private land. Whether a private gun club or just an open piece of ground with a good back stop. Crude is ok. I can provide my own targets and stands. Naturally, we'd have to clean up the area after we're done, before we leave. That's a given. |
Still trying. Found only one local club that would be suitable, but I'm not a member, and the dues are $100.00 a year plus range fees. I'm looking into this possibility since this is a very nice facility, with indoor and outdoor ranges. The rifle ranges are outdoors. The guest fee is $3.00 per person. The main problem, if I do become a member is that with the hunting season getting close, range time on the weekends are getting crowded. We may have to either, try for a weekday, or try for late October/early November. I'm meeting with them soon. I'll give more info as soon as possible. Here is the website for the club. You guys may want to read up on the rules, and express any concerns/questions you may have about them to me, so I can pass them on. Thanks
ehilbert.wso.net/OSC/ Edited to add: Sorry guys, I should not have tried to organize this without being a club member beforehand. Please bear with me, and I will do my best to get this thing set up. |
Your doing a great job. A little at a time and things will come together. Anything doing well is not easy.
A weekday shoot may not be viable for me. I probably could do it on a Friday. Rather have it on a weekend. See what you can come up with and we'll go from there. |
I've shot at this club once before. It is a really nice place. O'most too nice for a gun club. The pistol ranges were fantastic. I'm not sure about the rifle ranges, I never saw them.
Non-members that are shooting need to be escorted by a member at all times. Even if one of us was a member it wouldn't really work out. They do have many weekend matches and welcome non-members to shoot their bullseye, cowboy, and whatever else matches. Maybe you could talk a club official into having a black rifle match or something along those lines. It may mean we all need to chip in a few bucks and deal with non-arfcomers, but it is better than nothing. Give it a shot, the worst they can say is NO. -LG |

"Even if one of us was a member it wouldn't really work out"
What do you mean by this? Are you saying they won't let a small group shoot together? I am meeting with them tonight, and will ask them about having a group shoot. From what I can tell so far, they charge three dollars per person for "guests". If I do become a member, I will create a list of names beforehand. I wouldn't think this would be a problem. If they are not willing to be flexible then screw em. I'm not paying a hundred bucks dues, plus the seventy-five for "initiation", just to get screwed out of this thing. I will be asking a lot of hard questions tonight. |
Sorry I could have been a bit more clear. When I was there I asked if I could shoot on the plate rack while my host was on a different range. They responded you had to be with a member while shooting. I guess if everyone was on the same range the entire time it would be fine. I was figuring a large group and thought that would be hard to do. I guess if it was a smaller group we could all share a range.
I've never seen the rifle range(s?) so I don't know what kind of capacity we are working with. Sorry, didn't mean to be a confusing pesimist. Hope your meeting went well. -LG |

Bad news guys. It looks like this range is a no-go. Too many hassles. For my $175.00 I would get: A ONE MONTH waiting period from application to approval, too many rules to list, extra fees for certain ranges, etc. Don't get me wrong, this is a very nice facility. But, they seem like they're too elitist. When I asked about a group shoot, they seemed to frown on it, unless THEY organized it, and there would be an extra charge for the group on top of the $3.00 per person guest fees. This place is just too ridiculous to have any fun at. So, unless someone else comes up with a range for us, it's a bust. I am truly sorry for getting everyone's hopes up, or for messing up anyone's plans. I underestimated how much trouble it would be to find a suitable site. As I said before, I am still up for it if we could find a place, but I'm tapped out. There just aren't any places close to me that are friendly enough to attempt this. If anyone else finds a place that is in the region, I am still willing to attend and provide logistical support. I will continue to try to find a solution, but for now it's a bust for this area.

Don't give up yet cwd. With all of the PA members, someone has to know someone. All right guys, time to get to work! Find this man a range! Ops
It probably wouldn't be a gun club that will host the shoot. Scared of the liability.
Most likely it would be on private property. No dumb rules to get in the way, only NRA safety common sense rules. Just keep looking |
I'm just a small timer with a few guns. Mostly subguns, a few rifle caliber too. The guys with 100 exotic rental guns like M-240s, SAWs, HK-36 and P-90s are dealers shooting mostly Post-May dealer samples. Speculation has it that BATF will eventually shut them down because dealer samples are supposed to be for law enforcement demonstration and manufacturer research only. If anybody has a good place to shoot where I can set up my tables I'll travel to your location. I just need to generate enough rental money to make the trip worth it. I attended a shoot two weeks ago with a lot of spectators and did well renting to them. Mario |

If you can find a place let me know, I'm in Clearfield, My sportsmans club would probably oK it but it only has three firing lanes!
Three lanes is better than none, and I can't afford a lot of ammo anyway. |
Depends on how many show up, it could work. Even if we have to shoot in shifts.
which club in clearfield. I just bought a HK PSP from Grice's a couple months ago.

Old town sportsmans Club, it's actually an old stripping cut and it's only 100 yards long.
There is a Glen Richey Sportsmans club with a six hundred yard range but i'm not a member there. Oh and Reed Township range in Houtzdale is 1000 yards but i'm not a memebr there either. Good news by the way, Grices and Bob's Army Navy are going together to build a multiple sport range , they will have .50 caliber matches, Service rifle, three gun matches, pistol(maybe even a shoot house!) and even paintball! IT'S GOING TO BE A MILE LONG! They are hoping to have it open by next year! Downside? 30 to 50dollars a year membership anticipated, but worth it in my opinion to access such a rescource! God it's good to have all this stripmined wasteland sometimes! |
No gloating, the only fun I have is driving in west philly and Broad & diamond by temple.

Too bad they don't allow full auto at W&W, I read the thread on the other site and those boys sound like they would enjoy shooting some C3.
Mario |
I cant find ANYWHERE in eastern pa that allows full auto anymore. if you know of one, please shoot me an email- [email protected] remove the nospam THANKS
I've been searching too and all I've found is private property, but the owners wouldn't want a bunch of strangers with machine guns. Funny, they LIKE it when I bring mine over. In fact, I'm heading out to a friend's cabin in Breezewood this weekend for a little F/A fun. I can shoot semi at my local range (3 miles from home) but I have to drive half way across the state just to shoot F/A.

I'd like to be in. Im a new member and would like to get to know ya guys. btw im in Altoona.
