Today was the monthly rifle/shotgun match at Rio Salado.
Joining me today were Shawn (aka Garyowen), Warren (of Ameetec Arms), Don (aka 62ndAssassin), and Matt (aka WolverineAtWork). This was Matt’s first time shooting an organized match, and he did very well right from the start. We also ran into MP5_guy and his wife at the match, nice to chat with them as always. The weather was nice and cool today from the overcast sky and rain…much more pleasant to be outside in than the 110+ heat of the recent previous matches.
Left to right: Matt, Shawn, and Warren
Don, kitted up ready for action
Don’s girlfriend Ellen brought their Australian Hunting dogs with them to hang out and get some exercise running them around the range….they were very calm in spite of the constant gun fire that would probably bother a lot of other dogs.
Matt Loading up my SST-870 he tried out on a second run through the shotgun stage
Knock the bad guy down with the pool cue, then run to the car trunk and grab your shotgun….all reloads must come from the trunk.
Shawn shooting his Benelli M1
Matt’s krylon camoed Mossberg 500 with cool Punisher Sticker
The other shotgun stage…4 slugs from Box A…4 poppers from box B….4 poppers from box C

Shawn shooting his Benelli M1:
The long range stage had 6 steel reactive targets shot from two positions at what I would estimate to be 75-200 or so yards.
Don shooting his CAV-15 with compact ACOG 1.5X on the long range stage.
MP5_guy’s wife shooting her carbine with ACOG and CAV ARMS pink furniture:
Me shooting my CAV-15 Trooper with Leupold CQT…I am very pleased with this scope, just need to start practicing with it more to become more proficient with it:
Warren’s Ameetec Arms “Pimp Stick” (what I was calling it)…I don’t even want to know how much this thing cost
Warren shooting his pimp stick:
Future gun owners learning at a young age. This kid shot better with his dad’s stock AK than I saw some guys shoot with tricked out ARs…you don’t need fancy equipment to shoot matches, run it with what you got!
Shawn Shooting the CQB Stage with his CAV-15 trooper with OKO sight.
Matt shooting with his custom DPMS rifle with do it yourself krylon camo:

www.cavalryarms.com/2gun/2004-8-14/Russell-1.WMVIf you have a pump gun, you should probably still clean it every so often…I haven’t cleaned this one since I got it last March, and its been shot a lot since then. At around 3,000 or so the shells were starting to stick on the way out. Easy enough to tilt the gun to the side to make them fall, though.

www.cavalryarms.com/2gun/2004-8-14/Russell-2.WMVIt was much easier to shoot long range for me than with my aimpoint that I tried it with last month. I just need to practice hold over on targets at various ranges with the CQT, worked as well as it was supposed to…just need to master the human component of the system. My 20" with ACOG TA31F and bipod is much easier to use for this sort of work though.
It was a very fun match today, and it is good to be seeing more local faces out there from AR15.com. Hopefully even more will show up next time.
