COLUMBUS, Ohio | State Auditor Betty Montgomery is dropping out of the crowded GOP field of candidates for governor and will seek her old job as attorney general instead, a campaign spokesman said Tuesday.

Montgomery, elected auditor in 2002, was trailing in polls behind Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell and current Attorney General Jim Petro, campaign manager Mark Weaver said.

"The only way she could win would be to repeatedly attack her fellow Republicans," Weaver said. "She doesn't want to win that way."

A formal announcement was expected later Tuesday in Bowling Green, where Montgomery began her career as a prosecutor.
