While Southern California was aflame, the state’s energy grid was under assault. Not by building-height flames but by one individual with a wrench. Authorities have taken into custody a 62-year-old Washington man for allegedly tampering with bolts that secure a high-voltage tower in Northern California. The suspect reportedly told a reporter his action was to demonstrate the system’s vulnerability.

While he was charged only with the incident in Redding, nine towers across Northern California have had structural vandalism, and authorities are checking their similarities with incidents in Oregon and Washington. This pattern of escalating criminal actions – including arson fires in San Diego at housing under construction and in Los Angeles at car dealerships – is disturbing as it is dangerous. To target California’s energy grid is to endanger millions of people, especially those who depend on reliable electricity to power life-giving medical equipment. There is another word for these actions – terrorism. It is a sad statement that we must be as diligent in our efforts to prevent disgruntled neighbors from attacking our infrastructure as we do foreign agents of destruction.

So if we stake out a line of towers and pop him in the head from a distance do we get to claim "He was just testing, but he failed?"
