Obviously beyond stupid. How many filthy rich security guards do you know ? Seems they needed to study the demographics of their intended victims.

The security guard could be forced to open the store and allow the thieves to get into secure areas.

I thought only the managers had the keys and the guards were just an eye around the parking lot and loading bays

The cops said they were trying to rob him, not that they were trying to force him to open the store.

Even so, what would he have access to, the office? Anything of value would far beyond his level of access.

I was speaking in generalities, many times the guard has keys to the store, I don't know what the store sold or if there were any employees counting money at the time. I worked in retail years ago and there was a certain time of the day I had 1000's in cash on my desk and would have been very vulnerable at times. A kash and karry was robbed in North Lakeland in the late 90's and the thieves got a big haul. Timing is the key. These guys did not seem to be this intelligent though.

Sadly, the security guard will probably be fired for resisting, because it's against Rule # 988.7, subsection XIV, paragraph 72 in the employee handbook, which clearly states that "employees must not resist, struggle with, hamper, or otherwise impede the removal, lawful or otherwise, of store property (to include employees, and the property thereof) by party or parties who might claim ethnic, social, or economic inequality; oppression, degradation, manipulation, or mastication, real or perceived."
