First Caveat - I am not a photographer. I was out cleaning guns this a.m. after a visit yesterday (and poor weather).
The Light looked good, so I took a few pictures of a unfinished Mod2 barrel, that I have up in NoVA to explain the Mod2 gas system to customers. Whole Assembly Assembly Disassembled: AN Fitting Straight Gas Tube: What this does is give a leak proof seal on the gas tube to gas block. With the convention gas tube setup one needs to either seal the block to tube with 1) Heat Resistant Compound - like Rockset) 2) Significantly high tolerances on the block and tube 3) a combo of that or 4) Port the gun larger than really needed to ensure sufficient gas to cycle the action. If your over port the gun, your going to do two things, have even more gas port erosion and higher bolt carrier velocity when it erodes, as well as the block and tube will eventually seal and you run into even higher carrier velocity -- which beats the gun to death sooner than needed. View of Gas Block Nozzle and Flared End on Gas Tube: Barrel Notch and Gas Block Self Aligning Prow To ensure all block will fit with all barrels - the gas block will self align on the barrel due to the shape of the notch -- with the taper pin system, a new block could not always be guaranteed to be bale to be mated properly with the old barrel which already had been drilled for taper pins on another gas block Another Look Thread on Gas Block Retaining System: Taper Pins, the bane of Engineers everywhere... The problem with taper pins, is that depending on how they are installed or re-installed, they can cause accuracy issues (as well as be scrapped or scrap out a gas block) you drive a metal pin into a metal barrel, and need to have enough tension so the pin is retained... Metal is moving someplace - and pressures on the barrel are not generally good. There are a few more benefits to this setup -- but here at least is a teaser for those who will be getting their Mod2 SR-15's shortly. |

Wow, I wish I could retrofit a barrel with this system.

When I first heard of this I thought "Improved"= straight tube with threaded block? Whoopty fuckin do!
Gotta admit this is pretty trick. KAC ingenuity Ive come to expect. At the surface it appears similar to anyone who has ever replaced their own brake lines but I can understand the theory behind it.Thanks Kevin for the clarification. ETA: and yeah, what osha said too^^ |

That is slick as hell. Will a similar system be employed on the 7.62 guns?
Yet another reason why I love KAC, they keep pushing the envelope of the AR design and do not buy into the mantra "If it aint broke, don't fix it" theory..

Very cool.
I was wondering how you guys had solved the potential gasblock rotation issue. Glad to see my theory was correct! And taper pins aren't the only bane of engineers. They're problematic, sure, but not nearly as bad as other things. |

Mod2 Gas is on all KAC/KMC systems now:
762 556 300BK 030 will tell you I was a serious naysayer on this and the URX4 - but I will say I have come around completely. |

I really like this. I see that PWS is doing something similar as well. Can you quantify roughly the difference in price from this system to the legacy system and the reduction in gas port diameter? Understood if that is proprietary.

We already ran relatively small sized ports.
I don't believe there was a price change on the retail side. While many of the parts cost us more, we think it was well worth it. |

Not that would actually matter to me, but what is the weight difference of all parts compared to the weight of your more traditional lo pro gas block/tub/pins? This is very interesting to me though and thank you for the pics.
Pricing remains the same as the Mod 1.
Very cool

This system is another good reason for KAC to start releasing barrels for sale

Kevin,
Where is the gas port on the barrel? I would expect it to be in-line with the notch that locates the gas block (this would also put it directly underneath the gas tube), but that's not shown in the pictures. This is a much more robust solution than the mil-spec taper-pins. It's nothing hi-tech, mind you, just good engineering judgement borrowing existing technologies and is one of those things that seems obvious now. |
So the Mod 2 still weighs as much as the Mod 1 though?
That's the case according to the site. |

Remember what I mentioned about a sample scrap barrel.
Barrel does not have port, chamber, or chrome --> I think to ensure I don't mount it and shoot it ;) I've even bought a SR-15E3 Mod2 16" Carbine... Yes I'm still waiting and bitching to Tom daily... |

Which, of course, you would have to keep on hand for demo purposes ...:). I'm guessing you already tried that though. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Very impressive. KAC is truly at the top of the game right now.
Everyone knows a real man's rifle has threads to lock the gas manifold on the barrel (M14, Garand). |

So I just had a conjugal visit with my new 14.5 SR15 SBR. I have one other SR15E3. Maybe it's because my older SR15 has been beat to hell in class after class, but I have to say my new 14.5 SBR is absolutely AMAZING! I wish I would have bought two.
Does anyone else think the ultimate SR15 would be a culmination of all of KAC's proprietary features? Say a ball milled 14.5 medium profile barrel with the new Mod2 gas system, URX4 rail and the SR16 carbon cutter bolt carrier. Please build this and don't mind the cost, I will pay it! |

Is it possible to remove a URX 4 rail without taking apart a mod 2 gas block & gas tube? That gas block & gas tube combo looks brilliant, but I'm trying to wrap my head around how a URX 4 & mod 2 combo is assembled/disassembled...
