My dad had a college instructor who was in one of the first Army battalions to go ashore on Guadalcanal. When he woke up the next morning, after his first night on the island, in the place of his M1 rifle and M1 helmet was a M1903 and a rusty "pie pan" helmet. The "survivors" of this first-night "raid" slept with their rifles after that.
