Clearly a Red-dot can be mounted on the rail by the handguard but so can a pistol scope.
So my question is mount a pistol scope up front or get one of these which is gonna add cost:

and use a conventional scope.

I had'nt even considered a pistol scope out front.

How about the Leupold Mark 41.5-5x20mm Mid-Range/Tactical M2 MR/T.

Does it have the eye relief to mount it out front?

Have you really given the iron sights a workout yet? They work really well out to about 150 yards. I'm talking as good as any red dot.

Anyway a fixed power medium eye relief scope will work perfectly, if that's what you want. I recommend QD rings for the scope.

Yup, just kicking ideas around. I have a spare red-dot laying around but there's nothing like a magnified scope for my 4 eyes.

Check out the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm Scout

I have the old M8 Scout scope and love it
The 2.5 power makes everything clear and brings everything a little closer to my 4 eyes.
I have it in tallish see-through rings so I can use the irons without removing the scope.
