I have a Stendard Springfield M1A which came with forged bolt and Winchester barrel.  How can you tell if its double or single lugged? And why is double lug better?

The typical lug format is:

one lug- in the rear. Welded or formed during casting on the bottom side of the heel of the receiver

two lug- same in the rear, and front lug at the receiver ring.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone with a front lug but no rear lug.

Take the receiver out of the stock and look at it to tell.

It is better because it will hold the bedding longer, if you like your rifle bedded. (So i have read)
