Most all the SBRs I see have barrels that are less than 14.5 inches. I am just wondering how many of you even have a 14.5 inch barreled uppers on their ARs. It seems people with the SBR just go as short as possible. Just curious to see, thanks!

Because I am not paying a $200 tax to go 1.5" shorter. If you go 14.5" then just perm attach a flash hider to get to 16" and fuck the $200 tax.

I got one.

Colt Socom 14.5.

I didnt SBR the lower for 14.5 though. It was for 10.5". Couldnt not buy the Colt barrel. Was only $160 NIB.

I've borrowed one from a friend before and threw it on my 10.5 inch guns lower.

Personally I have a stripped lower from a local ffl and will soon have one from his next series with the same number on the serial(the prefix in the front is different). I'm thinking on just having him sbr both of them. Might do one in 14.5 as I can always run a shorter barrel on it as well.

The m4 upper I borrowed(real colt off a 6921) was a second upper for my friends gun. He normally runs a 11.5 inch bcm upper with kac rail.

I have two 14.5" SBRs

Prior to the stamps, I had two colt SOCOM barrels with pinned phantoms. I eventually wanted to swap rails and what not. Using ADCO to complete the work, it's $30 plus S/H to pin the FH in the first place, $40 plus S/H to send it back to be removed (OR risk damaging your muzzle and DIY), and $30 plus S/H to send it back after the work is done and have it pinned again. Assume $10 round trip shipping (probably more) each time, and you're already at $130. If you pay ADCO, to tear down and rebuild the upper you save $10 S/H but it costs another $50. That's $170. A tax stamp costs $200.

If I want to go shorter, I can.
If I want to swap muzzle devices, I can.
If I want to tear down the upper completely and rebuild it, I can.
If I want to put a 16" OAL upper on it and transport it like any other title I firearm, I can do that too.

dont waste your time and money if you are going 14.5".... just pin it.. And you already mentioned it... If someone is going to do a SBR and pay the $200... they are going to go SHORT

I would only 14.5 SBR if the Colt 6921 was a on a really good sale, a couple hundred cheaper than a 6933. And you already had a short upper from a pistol ready to go.

WOW, so close to the setup I am contemplating for this SBR, it would be a LW middy 14.5in.

I am planning on SBRing a 14.5" LW Middy in the future, mostly so I can swap uppers as I please. But the original rifle is in a 14.5" configuration.

I bought my SBR as a secondary host for all the M16 uppers I've collected over the decades. Given the current price of '16s, there are times I'd rather leave the expensive go-fast switch in the safe, and just take my SBR.

That said, my two favorite M16 barrel lengths are 11.5" and 14.5" ... and my SBR usually wears one of my 14.5" uppers. I just like the way it balances.

Both of my SBRs are listed as 14.5" on the Form 1. That's their primary configuration. I've got shorter uppers, but for most purposes- the 14.5" barrel is perfect. Balances well, good velocity versus maneuverability. There's a reason 14.5" barrels are so popular with those who don't have to deal with NFA and can use whatever barrel length they want. Both extra short, and longer barrels are better suited as niche guns- the 14.5" is great for "general purpose."

As stated, the 14.5 has good balance and looks better than a 16" in my opinion, especially in an M4 profile barrel.
If you SBR a lower there are so many possibilities, and you will aquire more than one short upper.

I did 10.5" my first SBR, and I do love it. That said, I love the 14.5" on my M4 Carbine. I've really grown to love this barrel length. If I build another SBR upper, it will be 14.5". I have a YHM Phantom suppressor, and you can't perm attach one of those mounts as user-serviceable parts are removed from the rear. It'd be worth $200 for me to interchange brakes as I see fit or remove it for maintenance.
