Can we have a lever action ammo availability thread? While there is an ammo shortage (or panic, buyout, whatever) in general, it seems lever action specific ammo has vanished.
This is a thread for .30-30, .45-70, .357 and .44. You can also throw in .444, .35, .454 and any other less common calibers. Mods, if this isn’t appropriate for a tech forum, please nuke this. Today I found .30-30 for $3 per round. 3 dpr |

Good thread idea. This sub forum definitely seems pretty well organized and respectful. I dont think it would be an issue. But I'm not a moderator.
I was searching for subsonic 30-30 the other day out of curiosity and I came across this https://dallasreloads.com/product/150-grain-rn-subsonic/ I'm not in the market for it but someone here may be. It would have been expensive last year but by today's prices it's pretty good. |
|
I just haunt ammoseek every few weeks. .357 and .38 are both expensive, but for several months there was only one caliber or the other in terms of availability; makes me glad I only have one thing limited to .38 only that can't take the longer cartridge also.
For the price of current .357 (sometimes $3/rnd), it would make more sense to buy a .327 and shoot .32 ACP out of it; after a few boxes of ammo, your gun would pay for itself |
|
In these threads, I would normally post a photo of a reloading press.
Even that can't help you now. |
|
|
By the time somebody posted a link the ammo would already be gone.
The worst is yet to come. I don't see things getting better for a few years. Save your ammo for when its REALLY NEEDED.. |

About a week and a half ago Federal had Hammer Down 45-70 in stock on their site, I had wanted to try it and have not seen any in stores since it was announced around a year ago. I have not seen any 45-70 in stock anywhere else since November, when I snagged both boxes that a Sportsman's Warehouse had 1300+ miles from home while I was traveling, so I thought I missed the boat on the HD. It was $55.99 a box, which is $2.75/round before shipping/tax-not much more than the Underwood I usually buy. I bought 3 boxes to get free shipping which ended up at $2.98/round after tax. For anyone wondering, it's just their Fusion ammo with a nickel plated case with a re-profiled rim that supposedly somehow makes it feed better. Bullet is the same, powder charge seems to be too.
Went back Saturday and it was OOS (so I bought a half case of 168gr .308 GMM). I agree with OP that lever gun ammo is particularly hard to find, probably because it is produced in smaller quantities than ammo commonly used in semiautos and bolt guns. 5.56 and 9mm are both far easier to find and the prices are less inflated. I can find .38spl LRN at one of the LGS's nearby for 72cpr. I have not seen .357 Mag in person or online in about 6 months or so. On the bright side, 45-70 is cheaper than 30-30 right now, which costs about the same as .50 BMG-only I can find .50 BMG locally. |

I’m fairly new to the lever action game and started buying up ammo before things got crazy. I have a good amount but not enough to feel comfortable. It still blows my mind that lever action cartridges are gone everywhere. I’ve never see a panic buy like this ever. I’ve got components (minus primers) and now I’m regretting building so many 38spl instead of .357. I just hope we will see something change (not for the worse) over the next few months... doubtful but I hope we see some of these calibers come back.
Anyway, I did find some 44spl locally for like $32/box of 50. I didn’t love the price but I bought all they had (2). Blazer garbage too. |

If it's ammo thats had any kind of popularity in the 20th century or beyond its sold out everywhere. Took me forever just to find a box of.22WMR shotshells and even then it took someone finding local in a pawnshop. My .45 Colt and .44 mag lever guns and revolvers haven't seen range time in quite awhile. I have a few boxes of defensive or hunting ammo for each but I don't care shoot it frivolously because it's impossible to replace. At least I'm set up to reload a few hundred rounds before the primers run out but honestly, I'm hesitant to even shoot my reloads.

I'm in. Will be sure to post links if I come across anything in stock.

Quoted: This 100 rounds of .38 Special ammunition cost about $5 to load, yes 5¢ per round, and my Rossi loves them. https://i.imgur.com/qi7zDMfl.jpg 4¢ for a primer (Learned my lesson post-2012, stocked up post-2016) Free brass 1¢ worth of powder Free bullets from scrounged wheelweights and cast at home. OK....I did pay $20 for 100+/- lbs., but the other 300-400 lbs. were free. I can't for the life of me figure why more people don't reload, unless they have plenty of money or just don't shoot all that much. Seriously guys, either plan ahead and buy ammo before the excrement contacts the ventilation system, or start slowly gathering equipment and components for reloading. View Quote I think my biggest regret was not buying primers. I have plenty of everything else, but in all my years I’ve never seen a primer shortage. I’ll learn from this one for sure. |

If you have 30 cal FMJ's lying around, they work great in lever guns if you load the bullet backwards.

I want a BHA Model 89 in a bad way. I can still find ammo in just about any sporting goods store in 500 S&W or 460 S&W

If you can find primers, xtreme has some 158gn projectiles for not too bad. They shoot great for me in both 38spl and 357. $68/500.

I still have half a case of .45 colt (black hills cowboy ammo) that I'm saving for this years shoots, but can't find lead bullets to reload unless I want to start casting. Planning on a lot of snap cap practice this year instead of shooting. |

Got a notification from Midway last night for some Hornady American Whitetail Ammunition 30-30 Winchester 150 Grain at 30.99/ box. Of course, it was after I put my phone away for the night. By 0600 this morning it was OOS.
The good news is that there is hope. |

Looks like the notification went out around 830; I saw it and ordered immediately before I posted.
But that’s two notifications from Midway in less than 24 hours. Maybe they found some in a back office. I’ve been signed up for a notification from them for every .30-30, .357, and .38 round they have listed. |

I'm looking for a true unicorn...
.32-40 Winchester to feed my re-chambered BSA Martini Cadet. The last box I found, years ago, was the "John Wayne" commemorative Winchester loading. Snagged it before the collectors got hold of it. |

That's a quite long, tapered round over 2.5" long. The 32-20 is quite close in power and size to the original .31 Cadet round. Rob |

Got a notification for some Hornady.38 XTP, but it was gone when I saw the email 50 minutes after it was sent out.

If it helps anybody local to Huntsville, AL I would sell small amounts of 38/357 ammo or 38/357/44/45 lever action suitable reloading supplies.
Quantity is an open box or two of ammo, couple hundred primers, an open pound of powder, loose plinking bullets, etc. I'm not looking to profit, prices would be non-panic prices. Purpose is for you to be able to shoot your lever action, not for hoarding or reselling. |
