Today I bought a Marlin SBL in 45-70 for the brother in law.  Ordered a Brass Stacker sling/bandoleer for it.

Now I need to figure out scope and rings.  Lever actions really aren't my thing, he will be using it for Elk most likely, at ranges suitable for the cartridge.  He has other options for our 100 yard max range deer hunts.

Given the trajectory of 45-70 and my desire to keep it compact and light weight, I was thinking 1-4, 1-5 or 2-7x Leupold.  I don't want to remove the rear peep sight so rings would have to be at least medium height I'm guessing.

Recommendations, experiences and of course pics of your setups would be appreciated.  This will be presented over lots of booze and food on Christmas.

XSight rail and a forward mounted red dot works perfectly together.

It does take a bit of the looks of nostalgia away from a lever action, though.

We both seek the same scope.

The Leopold FX-II Scout IER 2.5x28mm scope with a silver finish is the only choice for that rifle.

Sadly, they stopped making it as far as I can tell.

I LOVE THIS FRIGGIN GUN!!!

The Weaver 1-3x20 may be of interest if you're looking for lightweight.

Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20mm Wide Duplex.

Light, tough, doesn't throw off the balance.

And tons of eye relief.

Might want to look at a Leupold 1-4x20 or 1.5x20 variable.  Incredible field of view at the lowest setting but enough to dial it up for target shooting at 100 yards or so.

Just mounted:

Leupold VX-R Scout, 1.5 X 5 on a 30mm tube in Warne rings.

All I can say about it is....DUDE!

I'm running the Leupold VX-HOG 1-4x20 on my 1895 SBL and love it.    I believe it is discontinued but a quick search showed that some are still available.

I’ve had a 1.5-4.5 compact Bushnell on my guidegun for the last decade or so. I was given it as a gift and was sceptical about its durability but it’s  been a good optic.

I think it needs to be stainless at least. YMMV....

Done with it.  Went with the 2.5-8x36. BIL is gonna dig it.

I never wanted one of these, I may have to get my own next.
