    What caliber are they ?

'06,   30-40 Krag,  and .405 Win  are most common.            I really want one of these in 30-06  (but have no experience with them)

IIRC it is said that they do not carry as well as other leverguns cause of the box magazine.

    Sounds too pricy .   :-(

if they made a full stock version, then I might be willing to buy one...but I hate the 10 inches of exposed barrel.

I  have the .405, put a replica Lyman side mount sight on it. Very nice rifle, definately lets you know when it goes bang but not as bad as I thought. I had a Browning 30-06 version but sold it as I didn't care for the phony engraving on the receiver. This 405 is nice even though it has the tang safety, its pretty unobtrusive. I haven't really shot it enough to comment about accuracy but it's functioned well.

The Browning versions were much nicer. Mine is a Grade 1 with no engraving.

I shot a Browning .30/40 years ago.
It was hellanice and accurate too.
I should have bought that rifle but passed.

The wood on the Winchesters isn't quite as nice, the fitting is a bit rougher, the blueing is a bit blacker and the actions are a bit stiffer.
Oh, they are also a heck of a lot more expensive, I could have bought that .30/40 '95 Browning used for $400

Stupid, stupid me.

I bought a Grade I 1895 in 30-06 about 6 years ago.  I found a second used stock set which I had sling swivels and a rubber buttpad added to which made it nicer for hunting.  Then I had a custom scout mount made for it and mounted a Leupold scout scope.  I hand loaded up several different bullets with moderate results.  I tested the factory Winchester 180 grain Silvertips (Alminum tipped silver box not plastic tipped supreme black box).  I have shot several groups less than 1" at 100yds from sandbags with these.  It does carry a little different but I find that it fits nicely in the hand and balances perfectly if holding it by the box mag.  Four years ago I dropped a cow elk where she stood at 212 yards with one shot from my 1895 using the 180gr Winchester Silvertips (silver box with elk on the box).  Even had 3 witnesses for my true tall tell.  My only regret is that I got mine before they came out with the case colored takedown model that CDNN has for $1200.  I love the takedowns but have never shot one.

I had a Browning 1895 that I got after the First Gulf war in 91 in 30-06.  Added a Williams reciever sight to it and traded it later for a Browning 1886 carbine.

I guess I'm spoiled by the Browning versions since the Winchesters look cheap now.
