I would keep it.
Never know when you will get something with known load data. If you really don't need it, try to trade even-Steven or something you need. |

I will look in my old data book and see if there is a load with 296 later when I am in my library. Sometimes they have loads that are no longer published.
296 is the same/extremely similar to H110. Look in the Hogdon book too. I use 296 for .300AAC and I am about out. I have plenty of 231. Wish we could trade..... I will get back to you. |

I would think that 296 would be wayyyy too slow for 45acp, as 296 is normally used for magnum class revolver loads.
But I am sure you'll be able to trade it off for something more suitable like W-231/HP38 |

As said, W296 is magnum revolver/.30 Carbine powder.

I'm not one to spread rumors, but am one to spread a word of caution.
I have read that W296 SHOULD NOT be lightly loaded as it is one of those powders subject to detonation. This is why, when it is used, it is used to nearly fill the case. I believe you do not low fill densities with W296. Winchester used to discuss this and warn against light W296 loads in their loading data brochure. Before using it, I would thoroughly research the facts behind what I am trying to remember. I may have gotten some of it wrong but believe you should proceed with caution using it for 45 ACP - or not at all. |

296 is great in stuff like .44 mag. Even then though it's almost exclusively pigeonholed into a narrow charge range. 296 likes it hot, and .45 ain't (In my experience anyway!)

I was thinking more like 255gr slugs out of a 5" N-frame Smith. Still not in my data books for a few hours.....

Unless you have a firearm in:
.44 Mag, .357 Mag, one of the other big revolver calibers, .30 Carbine, and yes, there are loads in .45 Colt that will work, preferrably with a Ruger or similar revolver, or a .45 Colt rifle, you probably better sell it. |

W296 has an impressive muzzle flash. Would definitely get someone's attention. I use it in .44 Mag and it meters well, makes very accurate loads and I love the stuff.
As to its suitability for a .357 carry gun, I think you would have to try it and decide for yourself. For practice I think it would be just fine, and fun. |
