i have been loading .45acp for bulk shooting with 6 grains of unique over a 230 grain fmj it has plenty of speed for plate and bowling pin matches
and at the duleing tree it turns 3 plates at a times once in a while 
so thear is plenty of power in this round but the powder residue left behind on the gun and my hands has left me looking for a cleaner burning powder with the same burn rate i have tried clays....very clean burning but low on velocity even at the max load i am looking for Recommendation for a substatute powder that is clean burning with the velocity i whant any input will be appreciated |

I'm guessing your 6gr of Unique is running about 800fps. I have found Magic with WST in my 45's. 4.5-4.9gr WST behind 230gr FMJ is soft, clean and scary accurate. 4.7gr runs just about 800fps in my 1911s.

Without compression, I have found that Unique (even the newer formulation) can leave residue. WST, Universal Clays, WW-231, and AA-5, are what I have used.
Like others, I have found W-231 to be a bit smoky with lead bullets, but it is a useful powder for other calibers, so it remains on my counter. If you pushed me for one recommendation, then I would go with WST over Universal, but you are GTG with either. |

try 5.5 - 6 grs of w 231. much cleaner.

Power Pistol.
I've mostly used it with 10mm, but I have used some jacketed bullet data on some lead 200gr SWC in .45ACP, and damn! They were moving really well. For some reason, Alliant must assume all people use is Gold Dot Hollowpoints with Power Pistol, and seldom post data for FMJ or plain lead bullets, so I kind of have to find my own load. I'm not posting the load I used, but they were moving a lot faster than they should have been  I'd try Power Pistol and try working your way up to the max published load. It's not as clean as Clays (which is what I usually use with .45 plinking loads) but I'm sure it's a lot cleaner than Unique. |

I've had real good results with titegroup. Burns clean regardless of charge level and a little goes a long way. I run a real light load of 4 grains in front of a 230 grain Hornady HAP for IDPA and it works well for me. Runs in my Kimber too.

That was the first powder I used when I started reloading, then I found Tightgroup. Love it too. I would always have flakes of Unique on my hands and arms, I doubt I'll ever use it again.

I would recommend TiteGroup or WST.
But I loaded 500 or so 45 ACP's with 6.0 gr Unique and a cast 230 gr RN today. My favorite 45 ACP powder is Clays, but I am trying to use up my stock of old school Unique. |

I switched from Unique to VV N340 about 10 years age, due to cleanliness.
N340 is great, the drawback is cost, and availability I'll be trying Titegroup when I run out this time. |

Tagged for answers... my .45 loads with Unique (6.5gr behind a 200gr flat point) are a hell of a lot dirtier than my 10mm loads with Unique (7.2gr behind a 180gr RNFP)

Yes, MPF does stand for Major Power Factor. Your load is over 170, so it's GTG. As I said earlier, I went away from Unique because I found it dirty unless the load density was high. Still waiting to hear more about Power Pistol and Titegroup. |

I'd try Power Pistol and try working your way up to the max published load. It's not as clean as Clays (which is what I usually use with .45 plinking loads) but I'm sure it's a lot cleaner than Unique. +1 In my 5" 1911 6.5 grains gives me around 825fps. 7.5 grains gives me just a hair over 900 fps. All of the loads are using a 200 grain cast flat point. My cast have a brinnel of 21 and even with the 900 fps load I am getting some leading at the chamber. I would recommend a softer bullet. It is a clean powder that shoots well and cycles well with both 200 and 230 grain bullets. Dolomite Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
