[Last Edit: dryflash3]
Rarely does a day go by that I don't pop in my reloading room and do something.  A lot of the time is due to some inspiration that I picked up on here, whether it was a subject topic or something that someone may have mentioned in their reply.

Today's reloading interest involved something Angus6 mentioned in a thread a few days ago, and that's using Hornady locking rings to switch dies back and forth on his 1050.  I never used Hornady's locking rings, and in fact pretty much stayed away from locking die rings due to most of them boogering up the die threads somewhere along the line.  An exception might be Dryflash's die ring mod with the lead shot.  I picked up some Hornady lock rings.  In short, I wish I would have done it a long time ago!  Those things are great!

So I spent my morning getting my .223 case prep dies out of my 650's tool head and setting up the case preparation and reloading die set up with the lock rings for the 1050.  The lock rings are a lot cheaper than an additional tool head and pretty quick to change out.  Maybe not quite as fast as a $200 tool head, but fast enough for the savings!

Too bad I didn't have the rings last week when I prepped close to 5 gallons of 223 for a good friend!  It would have been more efficient on the 1050, instead of once through the 650 for sizing / decapping and trimming and once through the 1050 for swaging.

By the way, I think Angus6 is a bad influence.  He has been responsible for me spending a good chunk of change with his common sense ideas!
So, what did you do today in the world of reloading?

Took a Lee production pot apart to replace the heating coil. I am 100% convinced I am never getting it put back together. Might circle back to this next month.

Ran another tumbler of 9mm brass.

Continued sitting .380 brass and started resizing .380 cases.

For a change of pace, I ran a small batch of .223 brass through the tumbler.

Unlocked my Inline Fabrication ergo roller handle and installed it.  It’s a nice upgrade.  Resized more .380 brass.

While that was heating up and cooling down, I powdercoated and sized all my cast 9mm boolits and some 458 socom boolits.

Loaded 50 44 mags and 100 44 specials.  Both with 240gr ACME SWC bullets.  10.5gr of Herco in the magnums, 7.5gr of Herco in the Specials.  The Specials were loaded with new Starline brass that showed up from Midway today.  Sure is pretty.

Annealed another 200 WCC12 556 cases on the AMP.

My V3 combo from CE Products in Canada will be shipping out next week(week#9).

Ordered a Henderson Precision Gen 3 power trimmer last Saturday at 9:04AM PST(pre-orders became available @9am sharp) to make sure I didn't miss out on the batch.

  • wet tumbled another batch of sized .223, probably have 8 more batches and I'm done with my current .223 inventory
  • Started using the RCBS military crimp remover on the cases, will take forever, but have it set up so every now and then if I have a minute or two to kill I'll do 10-15 cases

Went to the range today after switching my 650 back over to load 124gr JHP for my PCC.  Adjusted my red dot and then chrononed them and shot around 75 of them to function check.  This batch is going to be slightly hotter (1100fps) as I'm loading just a hair shorter.  Accuracy and function was great.

Ran a few other rounds out of different guns through the chrono.

Picked up a lil bit of brass but it started raining.  Being only 50ish and not that hard up for brass I packed things up.

Came home and sorted the little bit of brass I gathered and called it a day.

Going to load up 200 more of these for match in a few weeks, if all goes well then a run of almost 6k will be done.

Edit

Forgot I ordered some Blue Bullets too in 135gr.  Got 750 to try out the old batch I loaded 4-5 years ago shoots great in my Glock 26.  Going to explore them as a cheaper alternative for my PCC and Carry Optics gun.

Got my stuff all set up and loaded my first metallic rounds today (I loaded shotgun stuff back in the 80s).

Biggest difference for me?  Darn those primers and bullets are small!

unreloaded 6 x 30 rd mags in my RRA lower I built with RRA M4 Style upper and other stuff
Attachment Attached File

Performed flawlessly

Unreloaded 20 x 14 rds in each mag of 10mm.  Had 3 that didn't go off on the first strike but did on the second.  I attribute this to grungy primer pockets and primers not seated fully, loaded before I got into wet tumbling.

Attachment Attached File

Had about 5 rounds that failed to cycle out of the 280, thinking was due to the loads not being full powered enough, they were lead projectiles thus limited to around 1000-1100 fps.  They cycled fine when loaded in a mag and the slide racked.  Using a KKM barrel so safe to shoot lead rounds through the Glock 20

Scrounged about 200 more pieces of .223 brass and a small amount of 9mm.  Kept these separate from my fired .223 rounds.  Washed the sand and mud off them when got home and let them dry in the sun

Took some new shooters to the desert and taught them how to handle a gun, and made a bunch of spent brass.  They were very helpful in picking up spent range brass, I have lots of new calibers.  But unfortunately they also picked up a ton of .22.  Oh well, only a few made it into the Lee App tubes during decapping.  Ran a bunch of 38,357,9mm, 380 through the fart (a few 22s too)
Also got a tracking # for four lbs of 231.

I loaded up some 300 BO with my new PCC 130gr .314 cal boolits.

Started with Unique so I could get some subsonics going. Started at 5.7 gr, worked down, then worked up afterwards.

4.3gr of unique was subsonic and accuracy was about 1.5" at 100 yards. More testing is required.

I relegated an old lee press to permanent depriming.  i got a Frankfort tumbler for xmas and have been depriming dirty brass to tumble it first.  The depriming makes a grit/carbon mess on my presses so I made a steel bracket to throw the cheap lee press in a vise in the garage to deprime and keep the mess away from my loading table.  The tube is the primer catch, I tape a sandwich bag on it to catch the primers and then just toss the bag in the trash.

I did research and took measurements; I’m looking at building a wooden powder magazine as dryflash3 has done and posted here.

I wanted to get a starting point, and I figured all these standard containers must be documented online somewhere.  Nope.  Nothing on line was “authoritative” in terms of dimensions, so I went ahead and measured my own containers.  Some of the online stuff was close to what I measured, some nowhere near.  But now I have actual data on my own containers to work from.

Last night decapped another 200 ea .45 cases and ran them through my new mini FART I got from the Midway sale a couple of weeks ago. No pins, just Lemishine and Dawn. Came out sparkling. Primer pockets aren't perfect, but beyond good enough for me.

Primed 200 ea .45 cases from the night before on Lee Auto Bench Priming tool.

Packaged up 250 ea .223 62 gr Fed Fusion I loaded last Summer using the cardboard/styrofoam 50rnd boxes I also got from the Midway sale.

Unreloaded 10 magazines of 147 gr Ranier plated reloads I did 8 years ago. These had 4.3gr of VV N350, a good load with excellent ejection, no stovepipes or other misfeeds. The test gun was finished and assembled last week.

Brownell’s RMR cut slide, basic RMR Rm01 red dot, Silencerco threaded barrel, Glock gen 4 ejector with Glock gen 3 slide parts, Rockey Brass frame parts.

I’m avoiding the factory ammo stash for now.

I used to toss used primers. Thousands of them weigh something and fetch brass prices at the metal recycling yard along with the brass I toss in the recycle box. The last box I took in brought me about $20.

I’m dusting off the LNL and sorting through what I used to use for pistol reloading. IIRC I separately decapped, then wet tumbled, then hand primed before using my LNL with a powder lockout die, and a bullet feeding die. If only I could remember how to use them all...🤔
And what loads/powders I preferred at the time...🙄

I picked up all the .308 brass after getting a recent Aero M5 build dialed in. I suppose I'm going to have to get reloading dies for .308 too.

I also picked up 300 - 400 hundred 5.56 pieces of range brass, I'll get them prepped for reloading so they're ready when components become available again.

Slow and safe is the way to go after that much time.  The LnL isn’t exactly as intuitive as a Dillon...

My contribution: I have limited wall or bench-edge space, as well as more equipment than bench positions.

So I started working on how to put an Inline Fabrication Quick Change storage dock (possibly a two-position dock) on my NSF wire shelving unit.  I think I have the mechanics worked out.  It’ll look like the kluge it is, but it should work.  I’ll post pictures once I get going on it.

Drove back home from my vacation today. Hit a few shops I have not been to before. Added about 2 hours to my drive, but it was worth it.

The people at Meister Bullet Co were very nice. They dont have a retail store front, they let me in the manufacturing shop to buy some. Very cool to watch.

finished finally, only took 4.5 months wet tumbling all my brass that's in inventory.  The last batch was about 1/2 a FART load of .223.   All told, probably equivalent of 8 or 9 five gallon buckets of brass, all sized (includes deprimed) or just plain deprimed.  Guessing 50 or so wet tumbling sessions.

Wonder how many pins I lost?  I ocassionally still find one on my driveway

Bought another lb of 296 and a lb of BE-86 from a lgs.  They had a good supply of powders, but not much else.  Installed UFO led lights on my Dillon 550 and my Lee turret.  Ran a couple of rounds of 45 ACP in the Dillon and some 357 mag in the Lee to check how much better i could see with the new lights - they are awesome.
