I am entering this with an open mind , I have only purchased folding knives for carry use
My only sheath knife is a classic KaBAR I purchased at The army surplus store in the town I grew up in over 25 years ago - it has served me well and is by no means used up only issue is leather wrap on handle is pretty dried up .

Anyway thinking around 3-4" blade , I want a thinner profile than my KaBAR , good all around knife that I can carry in a variety of situations

I am looking for the same type of knife (though I have several other fixed blades, including classic Ka-bars)

The current front runner for me is the Benchmade Adamas 375

The 375 Adamas is very nice

If possible I would like something quality like that , but perhaps less tactical , I really like some of the American Kami knives but price is a little higher than I can afford / justify to my household chief financial officer.
Something that's no more than $150 , but of course I would like to pay half that if I could - but I am trying to balance what I want with reality

You can spend a lot less on Moras and get a some pretty utilitarian knives. Not that I would object to ESEE that is.

ESEE makes great knives.  I would be going that route if I didn't already have a couple of knives made from 1095 steel already.

Put some boiled linseed oil on the handle of the kabar. Or if you don't have any blo you can use olive oil.

You're right about ESEE but wrong about the best price.  The best price is direct from ESEE through their Leo\Mil program.

You guys are great never even heard of ESEE before this thread

But curious how thin the handle would be

And SMC527 the more I look at that 375 Adamas the more I like it - I'm going to check out some stores today

Ok
Visited a Columbus oh knife shop ( also recommend them to anyone )  River's Edge

It's down to 2 knifes
ESEE 3

ONTARIO RAT3

Very similar knives , really like both come with kydex sheath and the ESEE also comes with a nylon holder for the kydex to allow traditional belt carry
Although the kydex holder on both seems enough

The ESSE is a great knife.

Also look at the Becker (now owned by Ka-Bar) BK-16 http://www.kabar.com/knives/detail/166
The BK-15 is nice as well, but a little longer and may not be the blade style you're looking for.  The prices are of course MSRP and probably at least $50 higher than you'll find anywhere.

The Benchmade Bushcrafter seems like a very nice knife also, and again will be up to $70 less than MSRP if you shop around. http://www.benchmade.com/products/162

If you have some extra cash to add to the knife fund you might give the Busse, Anniversary Mean Street CG a try,
