I had a thread in here about the barrett M-95, as I was wanting to buy one, but yesterday I fell into a deal I could not pass up.
I asked a buddy yesterday if he still had his .50 cal, and he said he did, but never shot it because he was busy, and would give me a hell of a deal on it. He sold me his Armalite AR-50, which he bought new 5 years ago. Plus a complete .50 cal reloading set up, RCBS .50 press, 50 cal dies, case trimmer, priming tools, and a lot more, (buddy bought a large lot of .50 reloading stuff from another guy and never really went through all of it, just dug out enough stuff to reload a few rounds). plus 250 Amax bullets, brass, powder, surplus API, and ball ammo, 50 rds reloaded amax ammo. He said he has put maybe 30 rounds through it in all. For $2000.00. and hes letting me make payments on it. Tell me about the Armalite AR-50. What do I need to know? Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File reloading gear was dropped off yesterday. Attached File RCBS press RCBS dies two case trimmers bullet swage / trim die 160 Amax bullets 150 turned brass / copper bullets 20 rounds of American eagle FMJ 50 rounds of amax ammo 10 rounds ap tracer 500 primers 2lbs of powder 20 pieces of brass |

I don’t have one, but that’s highway robbery.
Seems to be regarded as the arguably the best combination of price and performance on the market. |

I got it !
He said he bought the reloading set up from a .50 cal precision shooter, and then he himself bought a bunch of amax bullets, powder etc for it. the gun has maybe 40 rounds through it. he said theres definitely a RCBS press, .50 dies, and .50 brass trimmer. along with ammo and lot of components. |

Welcome to the club. You indeed got a great deal. The bipod alone is a $275 accessory from Allied. Good thing you got it cheap so you can get some glass on there sooner. There is a wealth of surplus bullets and brass over at GB. I got most of mine there and prices aren't too bad if you keep a sharp eye on the site. Although heavier than the Barrett you were after, you'll come to love the AR-50. I'm rather attached to mine.

Welcome to the addiction.
Good thing you got a steal on the gun and most of what you need for reloading. Keep your wallet out, it's not over yet. Attached File |

Put about 50 rounds thru one a few years ago. Buddy had one that he had never fired. He said "put this new scope on it as sight it in, please." "and this can is full of ammo. I have more if you need."
So I did. And I did. Sorts felt guilty ripping off $5 rounds. So I suffered thru about 50 of them, getting it fine-tuned. Awesome gun. Talk about 'reaching out to say HI'. Back blast off that muzzle device will get your attention. And that of spectators standing in the wrong place. |

Depending on what scope you plan on using, it could cost more than what you have in your .50.
Have you looked into what kind of scope you want? Rings.. Does he have a cleaning rod for it and a chamber guide? |

I should get some of it today, and rest on Saturday. ill update with pics. |

I think I got my bore/chamber guide from either AAA Ammo or Arizona Ammunition. They cost about $50, both places might have their own design.
Get a 60" one piece cleaning rod, makes cleaning the AR-50 a lot easier! |
|
Buy the rest of the accessories from APA like the buttpad quick adjust screw and monopod and bipod lock extension. Then get the best rings and scope you can afford. Then go shoot that thing. But make sure bystanders are LITERALLY behind you. Not to the side, not your 7 o clock. Your 6 o clock!
By the way there is a set of Badger Maxx-50 rings for sale right now in the EE for half price |

Congrats and welcome to the club.
I had one of those several years ago. However, a guy offered me a trade that I couldn't pass up. Still have the 82A1, though. |

I have one of the long Dewey 12 gauge cleaning rods. Really like it for .50

I put a SWFA SS 20x on mine (safety harbor). Descent glass, low cost, great warranty too. Rated for the 50BMG. Had to sell mine due to back issues.

Man! You need to keep looking over your back to make sure the police aren't following you!
Super deal!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great gun also! |

Holly cow. Great deal man. The first thing i did was cut that nub that sticks out on the butt stock. It always hit my hand in some positions.

Ordered my first components this weekend.
300 pieces once fired lake city brass .30 cents each. $118.00 shipped. 500 surplus API bullets ( .34 each ) $170.00 shipped ( shipping was 30 bucks ) Planning to buy 500 API bullets , and at least 200 pieces of brass every month. eventual goal is 5000 api bullets, and at least 2000 pieces of brass, 5000 primers, and enough powder to load all of it. |
|
I have this rifle, but in the limited edition green color.
I have found it to be very accurate. It's also the one rifle that everybody comes over and requests to shoot! |
|
I ordered a 50" cleaning rod today, got it on sale for $37.00.
also bought a 50 bmg conversion kit for my ammo master for $80.00. |

That's a killer price on the brass so long as it's not LC12. I was able to get a great deal on API on GB a while back. Every once in a while a guy has them for $210/1000. They are a bit on the dirty side but clean up well. View Quote |

Before you buy all of those API, be sure that you have a safe place to shoot them. They cause fires really easy, most ranges don't allow them.
As for LC brass, some years just suck ass! From the 80's into the 2000's, most due to cost and the fact that the .gov doesn't reload. |

I have a batch of LC12 that I thought I got at a really good price. When I started sizing the cases, I found out why. The brass is less workable than any other year of LC that I have. I broke my bench while trying to size one of them. They just sit in the corner of the reloading room now.....unloaded.

Another issue with surplus brass is headspace, if the gun was set up a little loose the brass can stretch. So much so that the first firing can ruin the brass.
There is a way to check it to be sure that you don't get stuck with a bunch of worthless brass. Also when you buy the brass be sure there's a 100% return policy. If not you might think about buying from a different company. Cheap way to make a tool is to find a piece of wire that's strong enough to bend and not flex very much. Make one end pointed and then bend it at a 90° short enough to fit into the case mouth. You want to drag it along the inside of the case about 3/4" from the bottom. If you feel it dip or see it dip in that area, that's from the case being stretched. If the case was stretched to thin (more than likely was) it can fail on the next firing. Having a case head separation is not a good thing in any rifle. So be careful and be diligent while inspecting surpluses brass or any that might be suspect. |
|
I've never had any issues with surplus 5.56mm or 7.62 mm brass, and I check them with a bent piece of wire. But yes, the 50 bmg is different as you adjust headspace when you install the barrel, so it can be out of spec easier. I will check every piece.
API is not the only bullet I'm planning to stock up on, but AP, API, APIT, and INCENDIARY are the most likely to be banned first, so I'm loading up on those first. Next will be ball, with a max last. I'm honestly planning to get a lifetime supply of reloading supplies in the next few years. At least 10,000 .50 bmg projectiles, 10,000 bmg primers, and powder to reload everything. Same goes for 5.56, 7.62, 9mm, and 45cal. Reloading supplies / ammo only goes up in price, so it's a solid investment, and cost saver long term. |
|
Today I received the new cleaning rod, it's awesome. Also got my api bullets, and press parts. Bullets look great, press is ready to go.

I have an AR-50, as well. Can you post a pic of the cleaning rod next to the actual gun to see a compared size? I use a bore snake that came with my rifle, but I am intrigued by the cleaning rod you posted.

MAKE IT BETTER!
I had a gunsmith cut the receiver and fit a Harris M96 5 round magazine in place. Smooth as silk. One of a kind mag fed Armalite AR50 probably 20 years ago. |
|
|
I've seen a couple AR-50's done over the years, what was done to strengthen the receiver? That's a big ass hole and it takes away a lot of steel, that and it also induces more flex.
Post some pics of yours, if you can remove the stock so that we can see the underside of the receiver would be cool. |
|
Buck,
Did you get a bore guide? I'd hate to see you cleaning your rifle from the muzzle end. Bore Tech probably makes the best cleaning products, Eliminator will lift the copper deposits right out of your barrel. Slip2000 makes a great carbon cleaner called what else, Carbon Killer. Both companies are top notch and make great products. |

Want a stinger case. Plus another scope. .50 bmg accessories, ammo, and reloading components will suck up my entire gun budget for 2018. Then in fall/winter, building my 13x20 concrete reloading room / gun vault / man cave will take my money until summer 2019. |
