In my experience it's been the other way around, and the supersonic rounds have an effect on the wipes. The wipes used in the old AWC HP-9 and the KAC Snap-On would degrade faster with supersonic 9mm.

So supersonic rounds will wear out a wipe quicker than subsonic rounds. Will the wipe have a noticeable sound reduction on supersonic rounds?

There were no wipes in the AAC M9-SD.

The wipes in the KAC XM9 were 1/8" thick x 1" diameter, 70 Durometer Urethane. 8 were used per stack, grouped as 3,3, and 2. Very easily made with a sheet of the material, and a gasket punch.

The punches are WAY cheaper on Amazon.  This will take you to a page where you can select from a variety of sizes too.

The one linked above is will be over $80 with shipping.

Amazon Product
  • The General Tools and Instruments 1271N Arch Punch is the ideal punch tool for punching a 1-1/8 inch hole
  • The punch works on leather, rubber, canvas, plastic, sheet metal, gasket material, cardboard and softer metals
  • The internal punch features an inside taper for clearance

Since this is a wipe thread..

I was reading here a while back that wipes were a "only have one on ya" kinda deal, as they were considered a baffle.

Did I misread that?

Agree - very useful thread.

Pro:  wipes reduce sound signature over non - wipe cans

Cons:  accuracy may be adversely affected

- greater blow-back in semi auto firearms

- very limited service life.

My general impression is: wipe cans are best left to pistol calipers:

Why the difference in hardness (durometer).  Considering they all perform the same function should not the hardness be the same for the best benefit?

McMaster Carr sells 5-10 count packs of rubber washers that come in sizes that are almost perfect for a few of the listed silencers above.

You reminded me that I have an AWC HP-9!  It's in my Browning Hi Power case and has direct thread on, needs no LID or other device and works semi-auto all the time, I suppose because it's so light?  I showed it to an ATF field agent a little while ago after wipes were declared parts and he said "If it came with a wipe or a set of wipes and there is a wipe or a set of wipes in it then it's OK, but if you have a coffee can of round rubber disks that you made to fit the suppressor then you could get in serious in trouble".  He also said that very few agents will ever want to handle your can or machine gun, they prefer that you just show them the serial numbers during inspections because they don't want to ever be accused of scratching or dinging up your finish.  I asked the guy if he ever looks inside suppressors for any reason and he said  "No, we don't". He seemed interested n my collection, especially the smaller .22 cans and asked a general question or two about how they work so I took apart a small baffle stack can and a Sparrow monocore can.  He was fairly surprised at how simple they really looked inside and thought he might have to get one someday.  I didn't get arrested for anything and he left...

Pro tip: Use the end grain of a wood block as your anvil rather than the side grain for a cleaner punch. A block of soft plastic like HDPE or similar works well too.

Next time we are running a batch of wipes I will try to remember to post a pic of our wipe punching machine. Full semi-auto production of freedom disks!

Sounds like a cutting board would make a good "anvil"

Yup.
I make my own punches, from round bar w/ a small diameter tube welded in the center.
Sandwich the cutter, the material, and a 1" Thk piece of 6x6, all in the vise and tighten down.
Out pops a rubber washer

My lil guy loves making them. Actually, he loves making the hole in the rubber sheet and could care less about the final product. For now

I'm a little confused about which Amazon punch I need for the Ghost.  Can someone help?

Also this thread isn't going to turn into Wish.com 2.0, right?

I bought this one for my Ghost.  Cuts is a tad bit smaller than the original wipe that came with the Ghost but it still fits the wipe holder nicely.

Last weekend I tried to cut replacement wipes for my AWC HP-9 can. There are (4 ) 1"D 1/4" thick wipes in this can. The can has never been fired but original wipes were in really poor condition, they were dried out and fragile so I tossed them.

Trying to hammer through the 1/4" material was surprisingly difficult. After that I tried to cut an "X" in the center of one wipe with a razor and it did not turn out well. After that I got out a really sharp 1/4" chisel and tried to center it but two wipes in a row split almost in half and had to be tossed. It took some time but I finally managed to get four cut but the "X's" were not perfectly centered. Maybe working with 1/8" material and doing eight wipes is the answer.

Now something KAC did a while back on one of their limited run 45 cans got me thinking. This particular can incorporated one or two wipes in a special end cap and each wipe had a small hole in the center of it. My question is will a hole diminish the effectiveness of the wipes in a can that was not originally designed to have such holes in the wipes or simply "X's"?

Here is pic of the KAC wipes from their limited run 45 can.

Attachment Attached File

This whole process makes me wonder if someone could make a special punch that incorporates an "X" into the center so you could accomplish both tasks at the same time, or would a stand alone punch that only cuts the "X" be easier to make.

Possibly a stupid question, but what is the best way to center these when punching? Just eye up and a dowl of some sort through the ID opening?

If a guy was really into it and needed a size that was not common to the plumbing washer market something like this would come in handy.  They sure would be some concentric circles.

I'd imagine that'd be something a fella could do if he was so inclined.

Amazon Product
  • Hollow punch is used to create precise gaskets and washers in softer materials; e.g. cloth, vinyl, leather, light sheet metaland gasket material
  • Includes an array of sizes for numerous ID and OD configurations
  • Dual cutting heads allow the user to punch concentric circles in one strike

Not up-to-date on the law regarding these wipers.  Is it illegal to sale these or have a bunch laying around?

If legal you can get laser cut custom sizes fairly cheap.  And just about any durometer and compound.

No, it's a poorly drafted law.  FOPA'86 had a provision that classified suppressor components as suppressors.  No provision was made for consumable components like wipes.  ATF is just trying to make sense of laws written by people who have no idea what they are legislating about.
