Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Flat top question/problem

I have a DPMS A3 carbine with free float tube, etc. and I have come to notice something quite interesting --

The rail on top is not like the ones that I see now a days.  I mean, the grooves are spaced out very wide and there are probably only 6 of them on the whole upper.  

Why is this?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueler?
