So I recently inherited a Marlin .30-30 and I've come to really like the little rifle. The lever action is just a "handy" kind of rifle. I'm kind of tempted to get a levergun in a more affordable caliber like .357 or .44 for some fun at the range.
So are there any other lever gun fans here? Post some pics! I want to see some leverguns! |

Henery blued 22 lever. Love it. Used to have a Winchester 1 of 500 in 45LC. Sold it because the butt stock was crescent type. I like the other style better. Will be getting a 1873 some day.

My lever guns are all Marlins: .22, .357, .44 and .45. One .357 and the .45 are set up for CAS. The .22s and other .357 and .44 are set up the same: receiver sight and square post front sight.
39A .22 39M .22 1894C .357 1894 .44 1894 Cowboy .357 & .45 I am currently playing with the 39M and 1894C the most, but I love them all. |

Nice. My 39 looks exactly like yours minus the lyman front globe. Great rifles. |

I would really like to pick up a Marlin 39 and 1894C in the near future. Fantastic looking rifles and I have really fallen in love with the handling characteristics of the .30-30

What kind of scope are you using on that cutdown 336? |
Wow, thats a beautiful collection you have. How do you like that XS Scout setup? I've been eying those lately. They look like an excellent setup- my 336 has a scope mounted in the standard location and it is impossible to get a good cheek weld with it. Its just too far back and too high up(see through rings and it has to clear the hammer). Does the XS scout rail interfere with the sight picture when you use a rear aperture sight? |
Very nice collections!
So do you guys actually find the stock sights useful? I'm interested in rear apertures, either XS or Williams. |
Why thank you. I love the XS scout rail. It works and it works well. To answer a previous question, it has a Burris 1x-20mm Mini-Mag scout scope on it, but just today I put a Burris 2.75x-20mm on it. It is a brush gun, I wouldn't use anything more then 5x. As for the scout rail on the guide gun, no, it does NOT interfere with the Brockman Ironsights or ANY peep sights you would put on a Marlin.
My stock sights on my uncut 336 and the 39 are just fine and I have no intention of replacing them. I wanted something different on the guide gun and I wanted a scope on the cut down 336. |

Anyone got a "tactical" lever gun? I've always thought of building one, and the terminator had a lever shotgun that I thought would fit the bill. Anyone got any ideas?
Boot. |
Yes, someone did before. I forgot his name on the board but he calls his gun 'Pugsly' (sp?). It was cut down like mine with a synthetic stock and a burris red dot. That is what I am doing with mine as soon as the stock comes and I'm sending the gun out to be tefloned. |

anything specific to watch out for on the 336's? might be buying one tomorrow for cheap.

If the Safety irks you, you can just look for an older one that doesn't have one. |

Barrel says westernfield, believe it's a marlin 336.

It is a Marlin 336 that was made for Montgomery Wards IIRC. Its pretty much the same as any 336 from the same year, but it will probably have cheaper wood, and/or recoil pad. |
I'd get rid of those scope rings faster then you got the gun though.
Yep, your correct. The "Westernfield" was made by Marlin for Wards. Here is a neat list I found for "Store Brand/House Guns: www.wisnersinc.com/additional_info/store_brand_house_guns.htm |

I've got those same crappy scope rings on the 336 I inherited. I have to use the "chin weld" technique for a sight picture. Does anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive mounting option on the Marlin? I'm looking at the DNZ 1 piece base with integral rings right now. In the not too distant future I'd like to get an XS rail and a better scope(currently its fitted with a K-MART brand 4X scope...) |
I threw a 3x9 bushnell I had laying around onto it, don't mind the scope mount that much though I hav'nt gotten a chance to actually shoot it yet.

Inexpensive? Just a weaver rail, some burris low zee weaver rings in the matte flavor and mount the scope. You won't break the bank but you can't go wrong. The XS rail is nice but you can't use a short eye relief scope, you'll need a scout or pistol scope. |

I get wood every time I see that rifle..... I do beleive it is high time I get me one of them! I would appreciate any details you could provide and/or anything you have done differently. |
I would have skipped all the rail honestly. A gun like this works best with the Irons. Otherwise, I'm correcting the last issue now, I'm having it Black T'd. Otherwise... I love the damned thing. What sort of details would you like? If you talk to Lew, or email him, point him to that picture and tell him that was your impetus! He'd like that. |
I expected anything but that response! I would think the rail adds a ton of versatility. Does the rail impede the use of irons? Also, what internal mods did you have done (trigger / action job, etc.) If it's ok to ask, what is ballpark figure I am looking at? I am guessing around $2k???? |

Well, it's not a distance gun (maybe 150 max?) so I don't have any reason for magnification on it although something like a scout set up with a 4x would be possible. If I want this much whallop at distance, I'll take my .375 H&H. I mounted an Eotech on it once and I don't see the point, besides that is sat real high so you couldn't get a good cheek weld. Maybe a micro reddot like the new Aimpoint would work though. Hmm... But basically, there's something really nice about this gun all stripped down. The sights are awesome, especially with my custom fiber optic front post. The little bit of rail towards the front is of questionable usefulness, there's not enough rail space to mount much of anything to it except a very very basic light set up. As far as internal work, you can see everything I had done on Lew's website. only change will be that I'm having the internals Black T'd as well. You're pretty close on the price. You can see it on Lew's website. Mine was a bit more for some custom bits. |
